Chapter 7 - The Room Beneath the TowerThe elevator descended past floors Ethan had never visited.

The numbers disappeared from the panel.

Then came a soft mechanical groan as the elevator passed below the service levels into a part of Mercer Tower that had been erased from daily life.

When the doors opened, cold air rolled in.

The archival level smelled of dust, metal, and forgotten electricity.

Rows of locked storage cages lined the corridor. Old servers stood behind glass like tombstones. Emergency lights glowed red along the ceiling.

Caleb raised his flashlight.

“Sir, we swept this level when you purchased the building.”

Ethan looked at him.

“And?”

“It was empty.”

Detective Keene held up Veronica’s key card.

“Not anymore.”

The card unlocked Cage 7.

Inside were twelve metal filing cabinets, six sealed medical coolers, and a wall of banker boxes labeled with foundation names.

HORIZON GRACE.

MERCER MOBILE CARE.

VALE FAMILY OUTREACH.

Ethan stepped inside slowly.

His entire public legacy sat in boxes beneath his own feet.

Keene opened the first cabinet.

Patient consent forms.

Many unsigned.

Some stamped with forged marks.

Caleb opened another.

Invoices.

Shipping manifests.

Equipment serial numbers.

One forensic technician opened a cooler and recoiled.

“It’s empty,” he said. “But it was used for biological samples.”

Ethan turned sharply.

“What kind?”

The technician shook his head. “We’ll need lab analysis.”

Detective Keene’s mouth tightened.

“This is bigger than embezzlement.”

Ethan felt the floor tilt beneath him.

He thought of the children at galas.

The smiling videos.

Veronica speaking about dignity.

He moved to the banker boxes and began scanning labels. One caught his eye.

BROOKLYN AUGUST — M.A.

His hands stopped.

Detective Keene saw.

“Don’t touch it barehanded.”

A technician opened the box.

Inside were Miguel Alvarez’s work badge, a cracked phone, a blood-stained notebook, and a child’s orange hospital bracelet.

Rosa’s name was written on the notebook.

Ethan could not speak.

Keene carefully opened the notebook.

Most pages were numbers, addresses, initials, and delivery dates.

On the last written page, Miguel had printed one line:

They are not only stealing money. They are using children who cannot fight back.

Caleb swore under his breath.

The technician lifted the cracked phone into an evidence bag.

“It may still be recoverable.”

Ethan stared at the orange bracelet.

“Why would Miguel have this?”

Keene looked grim.

“Because he found a victim.”

Ethan stepped backward.

He thought about Lily saying she was dirty.

He thought about Rosa sleeping in shelters while the woman responsible wore diamonds at his side.

Then his phone rang.

Rosa.

He answered immediately.

Her voice was shaking.

“Mr. Mercer,” she whispered, “Veronica is gone.”

The cold of the archive room became nothing.

“What?”

“She said she needed water. The guard turned for one second. Daniel started coughing. When they looked back, she was gone.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Above them, somewhere in his home, the woman who had hidden a crime for three years had just escaped inside his own tower.
