Chapter 18 - Miguel’s LetterThe letter arrived in a box of recovered evidence six weeks after the arrests.

It was sealed in a plastic sleeve, stained along one edge, folded into the back cover of Miguel’s notebook.

Detective Keene brought it herself.

Rosa sat at Ethan’s kitchen island, unable to touch it.

Lily was at preschool—a real one now, small and warm, with teachers who sent photos of finger paintings instead of complaints about fingerprints.

Ethan stood near the window, giving Rosa space but not leaving her alone.

Keene placed the letter down.

“It’s addressed to you.”

Rosa’s name was written in Miguel’s hand.

Rosita.

That one word almost undid her.

She opened it carefully.

My love,

If you are reading this, I failed to come home.

Rosa covered her mouth.

Ethan turned away, but she said, “Stay.”

So he stayed.

She read aloud because silence felt too heavy.

I need you to know something. I was scared. Not of dying. Of leaving you with all this. Of Lily growing up hearing lies about me. So here is the truth.

I found bad people using good words. Charity. Care. Hope. Children. They hid behind those words because nobody wants to question kindness when it wears a suit.

If I disappear, do not let them make you feel small. You are the strongest person I know. You made our home out of nothing. You made me brave when I wanted to look away.

Tell Lily her father loved music, burnt toast, your terrible green sweater, and the way you got angry at rain like it was personally disrespecting you.

Rosa laughed through tears.

Tell her she was wanted before she was born. Tell her she was never a burden. Tell her the world may be cruel, but her mother is proof that love can be fiercer.

And Rosa, if a rich man ever tries to help you, make him work for your trust. Do not give it away because he feels guilty.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Rosa kept reading.

But if he stands beside you when it costs him something, maybe let him stand there. Not too close at first. Make him earn the distance.

Despite herself, Rosa looked at Ethan.

His face was wet.

He did not wipe the tears away.

The letter ended simply.

I love you beyond the last light.

Miguel.

Rosa folded over the paper.

Ethan did not touch her until she reached for him.

Then he came around the island and held her while she cried—not as an employer, not as a savior, not as a man looking for forgiveness.

Just as someone willing to stand close to grief without asking it to become smaller.

Outside, the city moved on.

Inside, Miguel Alvarez came home in ink.
