Chapter 2 - The Locked ElevatorVeronica reached the hallway before anyone could stop her.

Her bare feet slapped against the marble as she ran, silk robe twisting around her legs. Rosa had never seen Veronica run before. Veronica glided. Veronica entered rooms like she owned the oxygen inside them. She did not run unless something behind her was stronger than pride.

Ethan followed without shouting.

That frightened Rosa more than anger would have.

“Take Lily to your suite,” he said without looking back.

Rosa grabbed Lily’s hand.

But Lily pulled away.

“No,” the child whispered.

“Baby, please.”

Lily pointed down the hall.

“She hides things.”

Ethan stopped.

Veronica stopped too.

Just for a heartbeat.

Then she pressed the elevator button again and again.

The doors did not open.

A red security light blinked above the panel.

Penthouse lockdown.

Veronica turned slowly.

“You cannot imprison me.”

Ethan walked toward her.

“I’m protecting an active crime scene.”

She laughed. “A crime scene? Because a toddler said ‘bad car’?”

“Because you had a non-public police file hidden in my bedroom.”

“Our bedroom.”

“No,” he said. “My bedroom. My home. My security system. My attorneys. My building.”

The elevator chimed uselessly behind her.

Veronica’s face hardened.

“You think money makes you untouchable?”

Ethan’s eyes did not move.

“No. I think evidence does.”

The private security team arrived through the service corridor: four men in dark suits led by Caleb Ward, Ethan’s head of security. Caleb had been former NYPD, quiet, broad-shouldered, and almost impossible to surprise.

But when he saw Veronica trapped in the corridor in a silk robe, Rosa crying, and Ethan holding an old police file, even Caleb stopped for half a second.

“Sir?”

“Ms. Vale does not leave. No personal belongings removed. No calls except through counsel.”

Veronica lifted her phone.

“You can’t stop me from calling my lawyer.”

“I’m not stopping you,” Ethan said. “I’m stopping you from deleting anything.”

Caleb stepped forward.

Veronica clutched the phone to her chest.

“Touch me and I’ll own this building.”

Ethan held out his hand.

“Give it to Caleb.”

“No.”

“Then unlock it in front of us and place it on the table.”

Veronica’s smile returned, but now it was thin and ugly.

“You really think I’m stupid enough to keep secrets on my phone?”

Ethan said nothing.

Veronica realized too late she had answered more than he asked.

Rosa covered her mouth.

Lily stared at Veronica with solemn, ancient eyes.

Then Lily whispered, “Under the pillow.”

Veronica’s head snapped toward her.

Ethan followed the child’s gaze.

Back through the hallway.

Back into the master bedroom.

Back to the white bed where Veronica had been lounging minutes earlier.

The bed.

The pillows.

The place she had told him to come back to.

Ethan moved.

“Caleb. With me.”

Veronica’s calm collapsed.

“No.”

The word ripped out of her.

Everyone heard it.

Ethan entered the bedroom and crossed to the bed. He lifted the first pillow.

Nothing.

Second.

Nothing.

Third.

Veronica appeared in the doorway, breathing hard.

“Ethan, stop.”

Fourth pillow.

Nothing.

Lily, still holding Rosa’s hand, pointed with her rabbit.

“Inside.”

Ethan looked closer.

One pillow was not stitched like the others.

A seam had been opened and hand-sewn shut.

Caleb drew a small blade from his pocket and cut the seam.

Something black slipped out.

A flash drive.

A spare key card.

And a folded photograph.

Ethan picked up the photo first.

It showed Miguel Alvarez standing beside a construction site fence three years earlier.

Beside him stood Veronica.

Younger. Smiling. Wearing sunglasses.

Rosa began to shake.

Veronica whispered, “That proves nothing.”

Ethan turned the photo over.

On the back, in Miguel’s handwriting, were six words:

If I disappear, ask Veronica Vale.

The room went silent.

Then Ethan looked at the woman who had shared his bed.

“What did you do?”

May you like

Veronica stared at him.

For the first time since he had met her, she had no perfect answer.
