Chapter 4 - The Brother Behind the GlassDaniel Vale arrived at Mercer Tower at 11:47 a.m.

He came dressed like money and innocence: navy suit, silver watch, clean shave, charitable smile. The lobby cameras caught him stepping from a black SUV and looking up at the tower as if the building itself owed him respect.
Caleb’s team stopped him before he reached the private elevator.
Daniel laughed.
“My sister lives here.”
“Not anymore,” Caleb said.
That erased the laugh.
Upstairs, Veronica sat in the living room under guard, now dressed in white slacks and a cashmere sweater one of her assistants had been permitted to bring from the guest closet. She had recovered enough composure to look bored.
Rosa sat on the opposite sofa, Lily asleep against her lap, one thumb still hooked around the rabbit’s torn ear.
Ethan stood by the glass wall, watching the city.
He had not moved in twenty minutes.
His attorneys were on their way. A private forensic team had been called. Caleb had already contacted a detective he trusted outside the original precinct that buried Miguel’s case.
But Ethan knew something ugly now.
Money did not merely hide crimes.
Money made crimes look like misunderstandings.
His money had been used as perfume over rot.
“Daniel Vale is downstairs,” Caleb said.
Veronica’s eyes lifted.
For one tiny second, relief crossed her face.
Ethan saw it.
“Bring him up.”
Rosa stiffened.
Veronica smiled faintly. “That is unwise.”
“Then I’m probably doing it right.”
Daniel entered seven minutes later.
He stopped when he saw the room.
The guards.
Rosa.
Lily.
The flash drive on the table.
His face did not collapse. Like his sister, Daniel was trained in survival.
“What’s going on?”
Ethan turned from the window.
“That’s what I’d like to know.”
Daniel looked at Veronica.
She gave him nothing.
That frightened him.
Ethan picked up a printed transfer record.
“Why did Horizon Grace receive $8.7 million from donors for pediatric mobile clinics that never opened?”
Daniel blinked slowly.
“You’d have to ask the foundation accountants.”
“I did. Three of them no longer exist.”
“What?”
“Shell vendors. Fake addresses. Disconnected numbers. All approved by you and Veronica.”
Daniel laughed once.
“This is absurd.”
Caleb placed Miguel’s video on the screen.
Daniel’s smile died before Miguel even spoke.
Rosa watched his face and knew.
He had seen the video before.
Ethan paused it halfway.
“You recognize him.”
Daniel adjusted his cuff.
“I recognize a disgruntled employee.”
Rosa stood so fast Lily stirred in her lap.
“My husband was not disgruntled. He was dead.”
Daniel looked at her fully for the first time.
Then he made the mistake that sealed him.
He said, “Rosa, sit down.”
Ethan’s head turned.
The room froze.
Daniel realized too late.
Rosa had never introduced herself.
Ethan walked toward him.
“How do you know her name?”
Daniel said nothing.
Veronica closed her eyes.
Ethan stopped inches away.
“How do you know Rosa Alvarez?”
Daniel swallowed.
May you like
Outside, the afternoon sun burned against the glass.
And somewhere inside Mercer Tower, a three-year-old secret began to bleed into daylight.
