Chapter 12 - The Hospital BraceletRosa did not remember sitting down.

One moment she was standing at Ethan’s dining table, hearing that her unborn child might have been pulled into the same nightmare that killed Miguel.
The next, Ethan was crouched in front of her, voice steady, telling her to breathe.
She hated that he was kind.
Kindness made the pain bigger.
“Lily was born at St. Agnes,” Rosa whispered. “Miguel died before she came. I had no insurance. A woman from a charity program helped me fill out forms.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“What charity?”
Rosa closed her eyes.
“I don’t remember. Something with light. Lantern. Horizon. I was scared. I was alone.”
Conrad lowered his gaze.
Ethan turned to Camille.
“Find every record connected to Rosa Alvarez, Lily Alvarez, St. Agnes, Project Lantern.”
Camille was already typing.
Detective Keene’s phone rang. She answered, listened, then looked at Ethan.
“We recovered data from Miguel’s cracked phone. There’s an audio file.”
Rosa gripped the table.
“Play it.”
Keene hesitated.
“Mrs. Alvarez—”
“Play it.”
The room went silent as the technician connected the phone.
Miguel’s voice filled the penthouse.
He was breathing hard.
Wind in the background.
Traffic.
“Rosa, if you ever hear this, I’m sorry. I should have listened when you told me not to chase rich people’s secrets.”
Rosa covered her mouth.
Ethan looked away.
Miguel continued.
“They used your clinic intake. They changed Lily’s prenatal file. I don’t know why yet, but her bracelet number appears in Lantern. I’m going to meet Conrad Vale tonight. He says he can help. I don’t fully trust him, but I don’t have anyone else.”
A pause.
Then Miguel’s voice cracked.
“If I don’t come home, tell my daughter I loved her before I saw her face.”
Rosa broke.
Not softly.
Not prettily.
She folded over the table with a sound that made everyone in the room lower their eyes.
Ethan stood beside her, fists clenched, unable to fix the one thing that mattered.
The audio continued.
“There’s a second copy in the rabbit. Stitched under the heart patch. Rosa won’t throw it away. She hates my sewing, but she loves me.”
Rosa sobbed harder.
Then another sound came through the recording.
A car engine.
Miguel breathing.
“Someone’s here.”
A woman’s voice, distant but clear.
“Miguel, don’t make this harder.”
Veronica.
Ethan’s eyes snapped to the guest room door.
Miguel said, “Where’s Daniel?”
The recording crackled.
Veronica’s voice came again.
“Daniel wanted to scare you. I came to save you.”
Miguel laughed bitterly.
“Save me?”
Then tires screamed.
The recording ended on impact.
No one moved.
Then Ethan said, “Bring her out.”
Caleb hesitated. “Sir—”
“Now.”
Veronica was brought into the room two minutes later.
She saw Rosa’s face.
She saw the phone.
She knew.
Ethan pressed play again.

Veronica listened to her own voice from three years ago.
For the first time all day, she stopped pretending.
