Chapter 14 - The Baby in the FileRosa could not make sense of the image at first.

Lily.

Her Lily.

Tiny, red-faced, wrapped in hospital blankets beneath a plastic warmer.

Veronica standing nearby in a visitor’s badge she should never have had.

Detective Granger beside her, out of uniform, holding a folder.

A nurse looked nervous.

Veronica’s voice came through the tablet.

“Is the mother awake?”

The nurse answered, “No. She’s still sedated.”

Rosa’s fingers dug into the edge of the table.

“I wasn’t sedated,” she whispered. “I was exhausted, but I wasn’t—”

Then memory broke open.

A nurse offering something for pain.

The room blurring.

Waking hours later with panic in her chest.

Asking where her baby was.

Being told Lily needed observation.

Ethan stared at the screen with open horror.

In the video, Granger handed the nurse a form.

“She signed consent.”

The nurse hesitated. “This signature doesn’t match.”

Veronica leaned closer.

“She is an undocumented, uninsured widow with no family present. Are you going to delay care because of handwriting?”

Rosa made a low sound.

“I was documented,” she whispered. “Miguel filed everything.”

Conrad closed his eyes.

On screen, the nurse backed down.

Veronica turned toward the warmer.

“She’s perfect,” she said.

Rosa stood, shaking.

“Don’t touch her.”

The past did not hear.

Veronica touched the newborn’s foot.

Rosa screamed.

The sound tore through the penthouse so violently Lily woke in the office and began crying for her mother.

Ethan slammed the tablet shut.

But everyone had seen enough.

Detective Keene’s face was hard.

“That’s kidnapping-related medical interference, forged consent, unlawful testing, conspiracy, obstruction, and likely homicide tied to Miguel’s death.”

Veronica’s voice was thin.

“You can’t prove harm.”

Rosa stared at her.

“You touched my baby.”

“It was a blood screen.”

“You touched my baby while I was unconscious.”

Veronica looked away.

Ethan turned to Camille.

“Get Lily’s current doctor here. Quietly. Full independent exam. Bloodwork only with Rosa’s consent.”

Rosa looked at him sharply.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Only with your consent. Every step.”

That mattered.

Even inside horror, it mattered.

Rosa nodded once, tears running down her face.

Lily ran from the office then, slipping past the guard, and threw herself into Rosa’s arms.

“Mama!”

Rosa lifted her and held her so tightly Lily squeaked.

“I’m here. I’m here. I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.”

Lily looked over Rosa’s shoulder at Veronica.

“You made Mama cry.”

Veronica said nothing.

Lily pointed at her with the torn rabbit.

“You’re dirty.”

The word struck the room like lightning.

Rosa froze.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Lily had given back what Veronica tried to put inside her.

And for the first time, Veronica Vale looked truly wounded.

Not because she felt shame.

Because a child had named her accurately.
