Chapter 5 - The Old DetectiveDetective Mara Keene arrived at 1:18 p.m.

She wore no makeup, no jewelry except a plain wedding band, and the expression of a woman who had learned long ago that rich people lied with better furniture.

Ethan had met her only twice before, both times at public safety charity events. She had accepted his donations without pretending they made him noble.

Now she entered his penthouse, took in the marble, the glass, the guards, the trembling mother, the sleeping child, the furious billionaire, and the elegant accused couple.

Then she said, “Nobody touches anything.”

Veronica gave her a slow, superior look.

“Am I under arrest?”

Detective Keene looked back.

“Not yet.”

Daniel shifted uncomfortably.

Keene noticed that too.

Ethan gave her the flash drive, the photograph, and copies of the files. He explained without embellishment. The insult to Lily. The hidden police report. The pillow. Miguel’s video. Daniel knowing Rosa’s name.

Detective Keene listened.

She did not interrupt.

When Ethan finished, she asked one question.

“Who investigated Miguel Alvarez’s death?”

Caleb answered. “Detective Paul Granger. Brooklyn South.”

Keene’s face did not change, but something in her eyes sharpened.

“You know him?” Ethan asked.

“I know of him.”

Veronica folded her arms. “This is becoming theatrical.”

Keene turned to her.

“Ms. Vale, where were you on the night of August 17, three years ago?”

Veronica laughed softly.

“I don’t remember where I was three years ago.”

Rosa whispered, “I do.”

Everyone looked at her.

Rosa held Lily closer.

“I was waiting for Miguel to come home. I made chicken with rice because he said Lily kicked every time I ate oranges, and he wanted to feel it again.”

Her voice shook.

“He never came home.”

The room fell silent.

Even Daniel looked away.

Detective Keene asked gently, “Did your husband mention Veronica Vale by name?”

Rosa nodded toward the photograph.

“Not to me. But he said there was a woman with a white car. He said if anything happened, don’t trust her.”

Keene turned back to Veronica.

“Did you own a white Aston Martin?”

Veronica smiled.

“Lots of people own white cars.”

Ethan took out his phone, tapped once, and sent something to Caleb.

Caleb read it, then looked up.

“The car was registered to Vale Horizon Holdings until two weeks after Miguel’s death. Then it was exported to Dubai through a private broker.”

Detective Keene wrote that down.

Veronica’s smile thinned.

Daniel snapped, “Is owning a car a crime now?”

“No,” Keene said. “But destroying evidence can be.”

Daniel went quiet.

Lily woke then.

She looked around the room, confused and frightened.

Ethan crouched in front of her.

“You’re safe,” he said softly.

Lily stared at him.

“Is the bad lady leaving?”

No adult moved.

Veronica’s face twisted.

“You see?” she hissed. “That woman has poisoned her child against me.”

Lily flinched.

Ethan stood.

Detective Keene noticed.

Rosa noticed.

Veronica had not shouted at Rosa.

She had shouted at Lily.

And for Ethan Mercer, that was the moment his engagement stopped being broken.

It became war.
