Chapter 6 - The Gala ListBy 3:00 p.m., Ethan’s legal team had transformed the dining room into a command center.

Laptops opened across the table. Printed records stacked beside untouched coffee. Security footage from three years of foundation galas filled screens in silent loops: Veronica smiling with donors, Daniel shaking hands with hospital executives, children holding oversized checks, cameras flashing.
Beautiful lies.
Rosa sat near the window, Lily coloring quietly beside her with crayons one of the housekeepers had found.
Ethan watched Lily draw a small house.
A brown-haired woman.
A little girl.
And a man with wings.
He knew without asking it was Miguel.
Something in his chest tightened painfully.
He had thought charity was a structure. Money given. Programs launched. Outcomes measured. Annual reports published.
But charity without attention, he realized, could become camouflage.
He turned to his lead attorney, Camille Ross.
“Find every vendor tied to Horizon Grace.”
Camille nodded. “Already running.”
“Every donor.”
“Yes.”
“Every child listed in their impact reports.”
She hesitated.
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
Camille turned her laptop toward him.
“We started sampling names from the 2023 report. Some are real. Some are duplicates. Four are deceased. Two belong to children who never received treatment.”
Rosa looked up.
Lily kept coloring.
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“How many children?”
Camille swallowed.
“Thousands listed across three years.”
Veronica sat guarded near the fireplace, still pretending none of this mattered.
But Ethan saw her hands.
They were clasped too tightly.
Daniel, separated from her by two guards, stared at the floor.
Detective Keene returned from the bedroom with an evidence bag.
Inside was a second key card.
“Private storage level,” she said.
Caleb frowned. “Mercer Tower has no private storage level above staff access.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Yes, it does.”
Everyone turned to him.
He took the card.
“When I bought the building, there was a sealed archival level beneath the medical data center. Old server rooms. Climate controlled. I never used it.”
Veronica closed her eyes.
Ethan saw.
So did Keene.
“You used my building,” Ethan said.
Veronica whispered, “Be careful.”
That was not fear.
That was warning.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What’s downstairs?”
Daniel finally spoke.
“Ethan, listen to me. You don’t want to open that room without a plan.”
Rosa went cold.
Detective Keene moved toward him.
“Why?”
Daniel looked at Veronica.
She shook her head once.
A command.
Daniel obeyed.
Ethan turned to Caleb.
“Take us down.”
Veronica stood abruptly.
“Ethan, don’t.”
Everyone froze.
He looked at her.
For the first time all day, she sounded afraid.
Not for herself.
For what he would find.
The elevator opened under security override.
Ethan stepped in with Caleb, Detective Keene, and two forensic technicians.
Rosa stayed behind with Lily.
As the doors closed, Lily looked up from her drawing and whispered, “Mama, is Daddy in the walls?”
Rosa’s blood turned to ice.
May you like
Because three years ago, Miguel had disappeared with a second drive.
And no one had ever found his work bag.
