Chapter 16 - The Offer Rosa RefusedThe next morning, Ethan offered Rosa money.

Not quietly.

Not with insult hidden inside kindness.

He asked her to meet in the library with Camille present, a victim advocate beside her, and every document placed where Rosa could read it before anyone spoke.

“I want to establish immediate financial protection for you and Lily,” Ethan said. “Housing, medical care, education, legal counsel. No conditions. No nondisclosure agreement.”

Rosa stared at the papers.

The numbers were enormous.

More money than Miguel would have made in twenty lifetimes.

Her first emotion was not relief.

It was rage.

“So this is how rich people apologize?”

Ethan accepted the blow.

“No.”

“It looks like it.”

“I know.”

Rosa pushed the documents back.

“My husband is dead. My daughter was used. I was drugged, lied to, made homeless, and then hired into the home of the woman who helped destroy us. You think money makes that balance?”

“No.”

“Then why put it in front of me?”

Ethan leaned forward.

“Because refusing to repair what can be repaired would let me protect my pride at your expense.”

That stopped her.

He continued.

“Money can’t balance it. But it can keep you from depending on me. It can give you choices Veronica spent three years taking away.”

Rosa looked down.

That was the first thing he had said that did not feel like charity.

Choices.

She had forgotten what that word tasted like.

The victim advocate, a woman named June Parker, spoke gently.

“You don’t have to decide today. You don’t have to be grateful. You don’t even have to like him.”

Rosa almost laughed.

Ethan looked like he deserved that part.

Then Lily wandered in, hair messy from sleep, rabbit under one arm.

“Mr. Ethan?”

He turned immediately.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Can Mama have pancakes?”

The room froze.

Rosa blinked.

“What?”

Lily looked serious.

“Mama cries less after pancakes.”

For the first time in twenty-four hours, Ethan almost smiled.

“I think that can be arranged.”

Rosa’s eyes filled again, but this time the tears were different.

Not softer.

Just tired.

Ethan stood.

“I also want to say something clearly. You don’t work for me anymore unless you choose to. Your suite is yours until you decide where to go. Your salary continues for one year regardless. No duties. No obligation.”

Rosa looked at him sharply.

“That sounds like guilt.”

“It is.”

“At least you’re honest.”

“I’m learning late.”

She studied him.

Then she pulled the papers back toward her.

“I’ll let the lawyer read them.”

Ethan nodded.

“That’s good.”

“But I’m not forgiving you.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I didn’t ask.”

Lily tugged his sleeve.

“Pancakes now?”

Rosa almost scolded her.

But Ethan looked at Lily with solemn respect.

May you like

“Yes,” he said. “Pancakes now.”

And for one fragile morning, inside the tower where monsters had smiled, a child was allowed to ask for something sweet and receive it without fear.
