Chapter 11 - The Man Who WaitedThey took Conrad Vale into the penthouse through the service entrance to avoid the cameras gathering below.

Too late.
Someone had leaked something.
News vans were already surrounding Mercer Tower. Helicopters circled at a distance. Social media was filling with blurry images of police vehicles and rumors about Ethan Mercer’s fiancée being removed from his building.
Veronica was not arrested yet.
Detective Keene wanted everything clean.
No rushed charge. No loophole. No billionaire spectacle a defense attorney could twist into harassment.
So Veronica sat under guard in the far guest room, silent now.
Daniel sat in another room, finally looking afraid.
Conrad sat at Ethan’s dining table across from Rosa.
Lily had fallen asleep in Ethan’s office, guarded by Caleb’s most trusted female officer, with the ruined rabbit tucked beside her.
Rosa had refused to leave.
Ethan did not ask again.
Conrad placed both hands on his cane.
“Miguel came to me because he believed I still controlled Vale Horizon.”
“Did you?” Ethan asked.
“No. Not by then. My children had pushed me into a ceremonial role. My signature, my name, my reputation. They ran the operations.”
“But Miguel trusted you,” Rosa said.
Conrad nodded painfully.
“He showed me irregular invoices. Missing equipment. A list of children whose names were being used. I told him I needed time to verify before accusing my own family.”
Rosa’s eyes burned.
“You needed time.”
“I thought I had it.”
“My husband didn’t.”
Conrad flinched.
Ethan asked, “Why didn’t you go to police after he died?”
Conrad looked at Detective Keene.
“Because Detective Granger told me Miguel’s death had no connection to Vale Horizon. He said Miguel was drinking. He said he caused the crash.”
Rosa stood so suddenly the chair scraped back.
“Miguel didn’t drink.”
Conrad looked at her.
“I know that now.”
She laughed through tears.
“You know that now.”
Ethan’s voice turned lethal.
“Granger buried it.”
Detective Keene nodded slowly.
“I’ll pull his records.”
Conrad opened one sealed envelope.
“This is a copy of my private audit. It shows Daniel and Veronica moving money through three nonprofits and two medical supply chains. But the worst part is the patient data.”
He slid a page across the table.
Ethan read it.
His face drained.
“What is Project Lantern?”
Conrad did not answer immediately.
Rosa gripped the back of the chair.
“What is it?”
Conrad looked older than he had on the rooftop.
“Children from shelters and foster networks were enrolled in diagnostic trials without proper consent. Most tests were harmless. Some were not. Your foundation’s name gave them cover.”
Ethan stared as if the words had physically struck him.
“No.”
Conrad looked at him.
“Yes.”
Rosa’s hand flew to her mouth.
“And Lily?” she whispered.
Conrad looked at the office door where the little girl slept.
“I don’t know.”
The room turned cold.
Ethan stood.
“What does that mean?”
Conrad’s voice dropped.
“Miguel’s last note said he had proof they used a pregnant woman’s medical records.”
Rosa’s knees weakened.
Ethan caught the chair before she fell.
Conrad finished quietly.
“He wrote one name beside it.”
May you like
No one breathed.
“Rosa Alvarez.”
