Chapter 15 - The Press ConferenceBy sunset, the world knew something was wrong inside Mercer Tower.

By sundown, Ethan made sure the world knew enough.

His advisors begged him not to speak publicly.

Camille said it could expose him legally. Board members called nonstop. Donors sent careful messages pretending concern while asking whether their names appeared in the documents. News anchors stood outside under cold lights, speculating with smiles sharpened by scandal.

Ethan listened to all of them.

Then he walked into the lobby.

Rosa watched from upstairs on the penthouse screen, Lily asleep against her chest.

Veronica had been removed in handcuffs twenty minutes earlier.

Daniel too.

Conrad Vale had surrendered his briefcase and agreed to testify.

Detective Keene had reopened Miguel’s case.

None of it felt like justice yet.

Justice was too far away.

Ethan stood before the cameras in a dark suit, tie loosened, face pale with exhaustion.

Reporters shouted.

“Mr. Mercer, was your fiancée arrested?”

“Are Mercer Foundation funds involved?”

“Did you know about illegal child trials?”

“Is your company under investigation?”

Ethan waited.

The shouting faded.

Then he spoke.

“Three years ago, a man named Miguel Alvarez discovered that charitable programs connected to my foundation were being used to exploit vulnerable families. He tried to expose it. He died before he could.”

The lobby went silent.

Upstairs, Rosa covered her mouth.

Ethan continued.

“I did not know. That is not a defense. It is a failure.”

Camille, standing behind him, closed her eyes.

The reporters erupted.

Ethan raised one hand.

“I will cooperate fully with law enforcement. I am freezing all foundation activity pending independent review. Every family affected will receive legal support, medical support, and direct restitution administered by an independent victims’ trust—not by Mercer, not by Vale, not by anyone who benefited from silence.”

A reporter shouted, “Are you admitting liability?”

Ethan looked directly into the cameras.

“I am admitting responsibility.”

Rosa began to cry quietly.

Not because forgiveness had arrived.

It had not.

But because for three years, every powerful person had stepped away from Miguel’s name as though it carried disease.

Now one of the most powerful men in America had said his name in front of the world.

Ethan finished.

“And to Rosa Alvarez and her daughter Lily, I am sorry. Not as a statement. As a beginning.”

He walked away before questions could swallow the moment.

On the penthouse screen, commentators immediately began tearing apart every word.

Rosa turned it off.

Lily stirred.

“Mama?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Am I clean?”

Rosa’s heart broke all over again.

She kissed Lily’s forehead.

“You were never dirty.”

Lily looked toward the hallway where Ethan would soon return.

“Mr. Ethan said Daddy was brave.”

Rosa nodded, tears falling.

“He was.”

Lily hugged the rabbit.

“Is Mr. Ethan brave?”

Rosa did not answer right away.

Downstairs, Ethan Mercer had just set fire to his own empire.

Maybe bravery was not being innocent.

Maybe bravery was choosing truth after guilt found you.

Finally, Rosa whispered, “He is trying to be.”
