Chapter 17 - The Trial Before the TrialThree weeks later, Veronica Vale appeared in court wearing navy blue and pearls.

The internet noticed the pearls.
Commentators debated whether they were a calculated attempt at innocence or simply the uniform of a woman who had never entered any room without armor.
Rosa sat behind the prosecutor.
Lily was not there.
Rosa had decided no courtroom deserved her daughter’s eyes.
Ethan sat two rows back, surrounded by attorneys but looking completely alone.
When Veronica entered, she did not look at him.
She looked at Rosa.
Then she smiled.
Rosa’s stomach turned.
The charges were read: conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, evidence tampering, unlawful medical testing, forged consent, and charges connected to Miguel’s death still pending before a grand jury.
Daniel pleaded not guilty.
Veronica pleaded not guilty.
Of course.
Her attorney stood and painted her as a philanthropist, a woman framed by ambitious men, a fiancée discarded by an embarrassed billionaire desperate to shift blame.
Then he turned toward Rosa without pointing.
He called her “financially motivated.”
The courtroom changed.
Ethan’s hand tightened around the bench.
Rosa stared ahead.
She had expected this.
June had warned her.
They would put her grief on trial because Veronica’s beauty was easier for strangers to believe than Rosa’s pain.
Then the prosecutor stood.
She played Miguel’s audio.
No one moved.
Even the judge leaned forward.
Miguel’s voice filled the courtroom again.
If I don’t come home, tell my daughter I loved her before I saw her face.
A woman in the gallery began to cry.
Veronica looked at the table.
Her attorney stopped smiling.
Then the prosecutor played the nursery footage.
Rosa had seen it once. She had sworn she would never watch it again.
But when Veronica appeared on the screen beside newborn Lily, Rosa did not look away.
This time, she forced herself to witness.
Not as a victim.
As Miguel’s wife.
As Lily’s mother.
As the person Veronica had failed to erase.
The judge denied bail for Daniel.
For Veronica, he hesitated.
Her attorney argued she was not a flight risk.
Detective Keene handed over evidence from the rooftop helipad.
The judge denied bail.
A sound went through the room.
Veronica finally turned.
Her eyes found Ethan.
For a second, Rosa saw the old spell—the beautiful woman silently asking the powerful man to save her.
Ethan did not move.
Then Veronica’s eyes slid to Rosa.
The spell died.
As officers led her away, Veronica leaned close enough for Rosa to hear.
“This isn’t over.”
Rosa’s hands trembled.
May you like
But her voice did not.
“No,” she said. “It’s finally starting.”
