Chapter 9 - The Whispering Garden

Spring returned to Greenwich with an explosion of color. The sprawling gardens of the Sterling estate were filled with blooming cherry blossoms, golden daffodils, and the sweet fragrance of fresh grass.
In the center of the lawn, Maya, now seven years old, was running through the sunlight, laughing happily as she chased a golden retriever puppy that Lucas had adopted for her birthday. Her dark hair danced in the warm afternoon breeze, and her cheeks were flushed with healthy, radiant joy.
Lucas stood on the stone back terrace, holding a cup of fresh coffee, watching his daughter with a heart overflowing with gratitude.
Clara walked out onto the terrace, leaning against the wrought-iron railing beside him with a gentle smile. "She looks happy, Lucas. Truly happy."
"She is," Lucas smiled, taking a sip of his coffee. "The child psychologists said she’s completely processed the trauma. She feels safe again."
"And what about you?" Clara asked softly, searching her brother’s eyes. "Are you ready to let the world back in?"
Lucas looked out across the sunlit grass where Maya had just tripped over the puppy, rolling onto the lawn and bursting into uncontrollable giggles.
"My world is right here, Clara," Lucas replied, his voice full of a warmth that no corporate fortune could ever buy. "Guarded, loved, and unbroken."
Maya scrambled to her feet, spotting her father on the terrace. She waved both hands enthusiastically into the air, calling out with a voice that was loud, confident, and completely free of fear.
"Daddy! Come play! Barnaby found a butterfly!"
Lucas set his coffee cup down on the table, a wide, genuine smile spreading across his face.

"Coming, Maya!" he called back, jogging down the terrace steps toward the sunlight.
The dark shadows of the past had been permanently erased. In the open, vibrant halls of the Sterling home, love was not a contract to be negotiated or a weapon to be feared—it was a sacred, unbreakable promise kept by a father who would tear down the world to protect his child.
