Chapter 10 - The Unseen Watcher

Despite the peace that had settled over the Sterling estate, the world beyond its gates remained sharp and opportunistic. The collapse of the Vance empire had created a significant ripple through the upper echelons of New York high society, leaving behind bitter associates and rival firms that had lost millions when Victoria’s financial schemes imploded.
In a private dining club in Manhattan, three men sat in a secluded leather booth, reviewing the latest quarterly logistics reports from Sterling Global.
"Lucas Sterling made fools of the Vances," one of the men muttered, swirling his scotch. "He exposed their fraud, seized their shipping lanes, and locked up their daughter. But he made a lot of enemies in the process."
"Sterling’s only weakness has always been that little girl," another murmured, tapping a manila folder containing photographs of Maya arriving at her private elementary school in Greenwich. "He burned down his own wedding for her. If you want to leverage Sterling in the upcoming transatlantic port bidding, that child is the only pressure point that matters."
The third man, a shadowy corporate fixer named Victor Ross who had quietly managed offshore assets for the Vance family, closed the folder with a deliberate snap.
"We aren't amateurs like Victoria," Ross said, his voice flat and cold. "Victoria tried to use bureaucracy and boarding schools. When we move, we won't leave paperwork behind. We monitor the estate, we find the gaps in his private security rotations, and we wait for the right moment."

Unbeknownst to the men in the booth, the waiter clearing their crystal water glasses was not a regular employee of the club.
Underneath his black waistcoat, a miniature digital transmitter was recording every word of the conversation, relaying the encrypted audio stream directly to the operations hub at Sterling Global Security in downtown Manhattan.
