Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vows

The crystal chandeliers of the Saint Jude Grand Chapel cast thousands of dancing prisms across four hundred assembled high-society guests, the fragrant scent of imported white lilies, and the polished mahogany altar where Lucas Sterling was supposed to pledge his life away. At thirty-two, Lucas was the sole architect and majority shareholder of Sterling Global Infrastructure, an empire built on steel, logistics, and ruthless precision. But in the private chambers of his heart, his entire world was centered around one person: his six-year-old daughter, Maya, whose mother had passed away four years earlier.

Lucas stood at the end of the aisle in a tailored midnight-black tuxedo, adjusting his cuffs while the organist played the opening bars of the bridal march. Standing at the rear entrance in an ivory lace gown valued at eighty thousand dollars was Victoria Vance. For eighteen months, Victoria had presented herself as the embodiment of patience, elegance, and maternal affection, effortlessly winning over Lucas’s corporate board and seemingly embracing little Maya with open arms.

Then, a muffled sob echoed from the private bridal suite hallway, cutting through the swell of the organ.

"Daddy… I’m scared."

The thin, terrified whimper bypassed the music and struck Lucas with the force of an artillery shell. Without a single glance at the officiant or his best man, Lucas broke formation. He strode down the altar steps, his polished dress shoes striking the marble floor in rapid, heavy beats as the guests began to murmur in bewildered shock.

He reached the heavy brass door of the executive powder room. It was locked from the outside with an antique skeleton latch. Lucas gripped the brass knob and forced the mechanism with a violent twist of his shoulder.

The door flew inward. Six-year-old Maya stumbled out into the hallway, collapsing against his knees. Her cream-colored flower-girl dress was rumpled, her braided dark hair coming undone, and her small face was wet with hot, frantic tears. She buried her face into Lucas’s tailored trousers, trembling so violently that her breath came in ragged, hyperventilating gasps.

"Maya, sweetheart, what happened? Who locked you in here?" Lucas dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around her tiny frame, his voice laced with protective fury.

Maya raised a shaking hand, pointing her index finger straight down the corridor at Victoria, who was hurrying toward them with her lace train gathered in both hands.

“She told me…” Maya sobbed, her voice ringing out across the sudden silence of the chapel foyer. “She said after today… you wouldn't be my daddy anymore. She said after the ceremony, a car was taking me to a boarding school across the sea, and I wouldn't be family ever again.”
