Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary of Home

Forty minutes later, the private gates of the Sterling estate in Greenwich swung open, allowing Lucas’s armored Maybach to glide smoothly up the winding, tree-lined driveway. The madness of the chapel, the screaming sirens, and the flashing paparazzi cameras were left miles behind them.

Inside the quiet house, the air was warm, smelling of cedar, vanilla, and the lavender soap Maya loved.

Lucas sat on the plush rug in the center of Maya’s bedroom, having stripped off his tuxedo jacket, bow tie, and cuff links. Maya sat in his lap, wearing her favorite oversized flannel pajamas, her small fingers clutching the lapels of his white dress shirt as if she still feared he might vanish.

"Daddy?" Maya whispered, her dark eyes looking up at him, still rimmed with red.

"I’m right here, my brave girl," Lucas murmured, gently combing his fingers through her dark curls. "I’m not going anywhere. Ever."

"Was... was it my fault the wedding broke?" she asked, her lower lip trembling with a child's lingering guilt.

Lucas’s heart cracked. He gathered her tighter against his chest, kissing the top of her head with fierce, unyielding tenderness. "No, Maya. Never. You didn't break anything, sweetheart. You saved us. You were brave enough to speak the truth when bad people tried to hide in the dark."

"Will she come back?"

"No," Lucas promised, his voice hard as tempered steel. "She will never, ever set foot near this house, your school, or our lives again. The police have her locked away where she can never hurt anyone."

Maya let out a long, shuddering sigh, the tension finally draining from her small body. She rested her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of her father’s heart, and within minutes, she fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

Lucas sat there on the floor for over an hour, holding his sleeping child in the quiet room, making a silent, sacred vow to the memory of his late wife: no stranger would ever enter this house again unless they proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that their love for Maya was as unconditional as his own.
