Chapter 14 - The Return to the Sun

Three days later, the private Sterling Global jet touched down on the private runway in White Plains, New York.
The autumn air was crisp and clear, the storm having washed away the last traces of humidity, leaving behind a brilliant blue sky and vibrant orange leaves dancing across the tarmac.
The passenger door opened, and Maya bounded down the mobile staircase, wearing a bright yellow sweater and clutching a new stuffed dolphin under her arm.
"Daddy!" she squealed, spotting Lucas waiting beside the black SUV on the tarmac.
Lucas caught her mid-air as she leaped into his arms, lifting her high above his head while she giggled with pure joy, before pulling her into a tight, warm hug that seemed to erase every shadow that had ever touched their lives.
"Did you have fun at Aunt Clara’s?" Lucas asked, kissing her cheek.
"We saw real dolphins, Daddy! And Aunt Clara taught me how to make sandcastles that don't fall down when the waves come!" Maya beamed, wrapping her small arms around his neck.
"That sounds amazing, sweetheart," Lucas smiled, setting her down gently and taking her small hand in his. "And now, we're going home. Our real home."
As they climbed into the back of the Maybach, Clara joined them, sliding into the opposite leather seat with a soft, affectionate smile.
"The federal court finalized the indictments this morning, Lucas," Clara reported quietly, handing him a tablet. "Ross, Julian Vance's remaining associates, and the offshore consortium have been completely dismantled. The district attorney said there isn't a single person left with the resources or the courage to challenge this family."

Lucas closed the tablet and set it aside, reaching out to gently squeeze his sister’s hand.
"Good," Lucas said softly. "The war is over."
