Chapter 12 - The Storm Over Greenwich

On Thursday night, a severe autumn storm swept across the eastern seaboard, knocking out power lines and blanketing the Greenwich estate in sheets of torrential rain. Thunder rolled across the sky, shaking the heavy leaded-glass windows of the grand residence.

At 11:30 PM, the estate appeared dark and vulnerable. The exterior floodlights flickered and died as a secondary generator failed—a calculated sabotage executed by Victor Ross’s tactical team from an exterior junction box three hundred yards down the lane.

Through the rain-swept darkness, four figures dressed in black tactical gear slipped over the perimeter wall, utilizing suppressed weapons and night-vision optics. They moved with military precision, cutting through the manicured hedges toward the rear terrace of the mansion.

"Power is down across sector four," Ross’s voice crackled through their private radio frequency. "Backup generator is offline. Move into the primary residence, secure the child from the second-floor nursery, and extract to the western rally point in three minutes."

The lead operative reached the French doors of the conservatory, using a glass cutter and a suction clamp to remove a pane and bypass the interior deadbolt.

The door clicked open.

The four men stepped into the dark interior of the mansion, their boots making no sound on the heavy wool runners. They moved swiftly through the grand hallway, ascending the sweeping staircase toward the second-floor residential wing.

They reached the door of Maya’s bedroom. The door stood slightly ajar, a soft nightlight glowing from within.

The lead operative pushed the door open, raising his suppressed weapon as he stepped into the room.

The room was completely empty.

The bed was made, the plush toys sat neatly on the shelves, and the small nightlight illuminated a single white envelope resting on the center of the mattress.

The operative frowned, stepping forward and picking up the envelope.

Inside was a single printed card with three words: Look behind you.
