Chapter 2 - The Envelope in the Lace

The organ music died in a discordant screech as the organist abruptly pulled his hands from the keys. Four hundred guests rose halfway out of their pews, craning their necks toward the foyer. The silence that settled over the cathedral was suffocating.

Lucas slowly rose to his feet, keeping one arm wrapped securely around Maya, who clung to his neck like a lifeline. His ice-blue eyes shifted toward Victoria, stripping away every ounce of warmth he had ever shown her. The billionaire who had dismantled hostile corporate takeovers across Europe re-emerged behind his gaze.

"Lucas, darling, please... she's having a tantrum because I told her she couldn't eat cupcakes before the photos," Victoria stammered, offering a breathless, theatrical laugh that sounded hollow against the stone arches. "Children get overwhelmed at big weddings! Let the bridesmaids take her to the nursery so we can finish our vows."

"Do not take another step toward my daughter," Lucas said. His voice was not loud, but it carried a lethal, freezing resonance that pinned Victoria to the floor. "Maya doesn't fabricate stories about boarding schools and abandoned families, Victoria. Look me in the eye and tell me what you said to her behind that locked door."

Victoria stepped backward, her composed socialite mask fracturing into jagged lines of panic. Her hands tightened convulsively around the delicate lace of her gown. As she took a hasty step back, the intricate silk stitching along the reinforced corset seam snagged against an ornamental iron candelabra.

Riiiiip.

The hidden inner lining of her designer bodice tore open.

A heavy, cream-colored legal envelope slipped out from the concealed pocket sewn into the underside of the gown, fluttering through the air before landing with a sharp slap on the marble floor right at Lucas’s feet.

The official seal stamped on the front in bold red ink read: Saint Michael’s International Boarding Academy – Lausanne, Switzerland.

Lucas knelt down, keeping Maya tucked against his chest, and picked up the envelope. He tore the wax seal open with his thumb and pulled out the crisp parchment within.

The first page was an irrevocable international custodial placement agreement. The second was an application for emergency legal guardianship transfer, signed by Victoria Vance as "acting custodial stepmother."

And the third page was a forged medical declaration claiming that Maya Sterling was severely emotionally disturbed, non-verbal, and unfit to reside within a domestic household.

The effective transfer date stamped on the document was today’s date—scheduled for 4:00 PM, thirty minutes after the wedding ceremony was set to conclude.
