Chapter 7 - The Final Retribution

The SUV door flew open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop.
Dante Moretti stepped out into the smoke.
He had left his corporate meeting the exact second the estate’s silent alarm pinged his personal watch. He didn't wear a coat, his tie was loosened, and his gray eyes held a lethal, apocalyptic fury that struck cold terror into the hearts of the surviving mercenaries.
Beside him, Vincent and eight heavily armed Moretti tactical operatives flooded the conservatory lawn, suppressing the remaining mercenaries with absolute, overwhelming firepower.
Dante moved through the smoke like a dark god of vengeance.
Two mercenaries tried to raise their rifles toward him; Dante didn't even slow his pace, firing four swift, deadly shots that neutralized both men instantly before they could pull their triggers.
He reached Elena, who was standing near the shattered conservatory fountain.
Dante grabbed her into his arms, checking her frantically from head to toe, his voice raw with panic. "Elena! Are you hit?! Tell me!"
"I'm okay! I'm okay!" Elena gasped, clinging tightly to his neck. "Dante, Russo is here—"
Dante turned.
Tony Russo was crawling through the broken glass on the floor, dragging his injured leg, desperate to reach a fallen pistol five feet away.
Dante let go of Elena gently, stepping over the shattered glass until his shadow fell over Russo.
"Dante... please..." Russo choked out, spitting blood, looking up at the man who dominated his nightmares. "I... I was desperate... Moretti, please... spare me..."
Dante looked down at the man who had ordered Elena’s ribs broken, who had terrorized her for six months, and who had brought violence into his home.
Dante didn't raise his gun. He looked at Vincent, who stepped forward with two federal agents dressed in plain clothes.
"I promised Elena I would remove criminals from positions where they can hurt people," Dante said, his voice cold and devoid of anger. "Shooting you, Tony, would be too merciful. Instead, you are going to spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal facility for international terrorism, human trafficking, and extortion."
The federal agents stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Russo’s wrists and dragging the screaming, weeping man away across the ruined lawn.
Dante turned back to Elena. The lethal darkness in his face evaporated instantly, replaced by an intense, overflowing relief.
He walked up to her, taking her face in both of his hands, pressing his forehead against hers.

"It is over, my love," Dante whispered, his hands trembling slightly as he held her tight. "The last ghost is gone. There is no one left to threaten us."
Elena wrapped her arms around his waist, feeling the warmth of his chest, knowing that the storm that had haunted her life had finally cleared forever.
