Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Gambit

The news of the failed ambush on 42nd Street sent shockwaves through the hidden corridors of high finance and syndicate power across the world.
In Singapore, Julian Vance stared at the dark screen of his satellite phone. The strike team had been dismantled in under a minute on a public Manhattan street, and federal law enforcement had conveniently been diverted from the scene due to Dante’s political connections within the New York City mayor's office.
"He’s not just a mobster," Julian’s financial chief murmured nervously from across the glass desk. "He controls the police infrastructure, the private security firms, and half the Manhattan judiciary. We can't hit him with physical force on his home soil, Julian."
Julian Vance—a man in his early thirties with slicked-back silver-blonde hair and cold, ice-blue eyes—stood up slowly, smoothing the jacket of his bespoke Savile Row suit.
"Then we strike where he cannot use guns," Julian said smoothly. "We strike at the stock exchange. Prepare the final short positions on Moretti Enterprises. Tomorrow at the opening bell, we trigger the corporate debt default clause."
Back at the Westchester estate, the atmosphere was focused and intense.
The grand library had been converted into a tactical business headquarters. Laptops, financial terminals, and secure phone lines covered the long mahogany tables. Michael, sitting with a bandage on his minor wrist scrape from the car crash, was working furiously alongside Dante’s chief financial officer.
Elena walked in, carrying a tray of hot tea. She had exchanged her sundress for a crisp white silk blouse and dark trousers—the uniform of a woman ready for battle.
"How bad is the stock manipulation?" she asked, placing a cup of tea in front of Dante.
Dante pulled her down to sit beside him, his hand instantly finding its place on her waist. "Julian Vance has accumulated fifteen percent of our public debt through offshore holding companies. If our stock price drops below four hundred dollars a share before noon tomorrow, a margin call triggers. He will have the legal right to seize our holdings in the shipping docks and the estate real estate."
"Can we buy back the shares?" Michael asked, looking up from his screen. "We have twenty million in liquid reserves."
"It’s not enough," Dante’s CFO sighed. "Vance is throwing two billion dollars of liquidity into shorting the stock. He’s deliberately bankrupting his own hedge fund just to crush our price."
Elena stared at the financial numbers flashing red across the monitors. She remembered the nights three years ago when she sat at her small kitchen table, counting single pennies to buy bread while loan sharks knocked on her door. She had learned the cold arithmetic of survival long before she ever set foot in this mansion.
"He’s using synthetic shorts," Elena stated suddenly.
Dante turned to look at her, surprised. "What did you say?"
"Synthetic shorts," Elena repeated, her dark eyes flashing with brilliant intuition. "When I was working as a junior legal secretary at the firm in Manhattan before we met, I processed bankruptcy filings for private equity funds. Julian Vance isn't using his own money. He’s leveraging capital from the Medici Heritage Trust in Florence—an old European trust fund that has strict moral and legal risk clauses."
She leaned over the table, pulling up the public filing documents for Vance’s shell corporations.
"If we prove to the trustees of the Medici Trust that Julian Vance is putting their core assets at risk of illegal market manipulation, they will freeze his leverage line instantly," Elena explained, pointing her finger at a specific clause on the screen. "And without their two billion dollars, his short position collapses within ten minutes."
Michael stared at his sister in absolute awe. "Elena... that’s brilliant!"
Dante sat back in his chair, looking at his wife with pure admiration. The stoic dark prince of New York was utterly captivated by the brilliant mind of the girl from the rain-slicked street.

"Vincent," Dante said softly, never taking his eyes off Elena. "Get the head of the Medici Trust on the phone. Tell him Elena Moretti has a legal presentation he needs to see before the New York Stock Exchange opens tomorrow morning."
Elena smiled, reaching over to touch Dante’s hand. "I told you, my love. We build it together."
