Chapter 2 - The Fortress in Westchester

The private medical suite inside Dante Moretti’s Westchester estate smelled of clean linen, iodine, and lavender.

Elena sat on the edge of a leather examination bed, wearing an oversized silk robe that belonged to the estate's private quarters. A female doctor—Dr. Aris, who had been on Dante’s private payroll for a decade—gently wrapped medical bandages around Elena’s torso, securing her cracked ribs.

"Take deep, shallow breaths, Miss Castellano," Dr. Aris said gently, taping the last bandage into place. "No heavy lifting for four weeks. The lip will heal in a few days, and I've applied an antibiotic salve to the facial bruising."

"Thank you, Doctor," Elena whispered.

Every breath still hurt, but the excruciating, sharp agony she had felt on the rain-slicked Manhattan sidewalk had subsided into a manageable dull ache, thanks to the painkillers Dr. Aris had administered.

The door to the medical suite opened softly.

Dante walked in. He had changed into a dark slate-gray sweater and black trousers, his damp hair combed back. He looked less like the shadow lord of the East River warehouse and more like an intensely protective titan.

Dr. Aris gathered her medical bag, bowed her head respectfully toward Dante, and exited the room, shutting the heavy oak door quietly behind her.

Elena looked up at Dante, her fingers tightening around the silk lapels of her robe.

"Where is Michael?" she asked, her voice tight with anxious fear. "Did your men find him?"

Instead of answering immediately, Dante walked across the room, pulled a chair up next to her bed, and sat down. He pulled a fresh, secure smartphone from his pocket and held it out to her.

"Call him," Dante said softly. "He's sitting in the secondary guest house on the north wing of this estate, eating a hot meal."

Elena’s hand shook as she took the phone and dialed her brother’s number.

"Elena?!" Michael’s frantic voice answered on the first ring. "Elena, are you okay?! These guys in black suits showed up at West Hartford three hours ago! They said you sent them, but I didn't know what was going on—"

"Michael," Elena sobbed, tears finally breaking through her stoic defense as she heard her nineteen-year-old brother’s voice. "I'm okay. I'm safe. Are you hurt?"

"No! They brought me to this crazy mansion in Westchester! Elena, who are these people? The guy who drove me said my debt to Tony Russo was paid in full and that I was never allowed to touch a poker card again as long as I lived!"

Elena looked up at Dante, who watched her with an unreadable, calm intensity.

"Listen to me, Michael," Elena said, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Do what they say. Stay in the guest house. Eat, sleep, and don't ask questions. I will come see you in the morning."

After hanging up, Elena handed the phone back to Dante. The silence in the room grew heavy, filled with the crackle of rain against the high arched windows.

"Why are you doing this, Mr. Moretti?" Elena asked softly. "Fifty thousand dollars is nothing to you, but saving a girl from the street... setting up a war with Russo's family... this doesn't make sense."

Dante leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees, his intense gray eyes fixing onto hers.

"Six months ago, I watched you cross the plaza outside my office," Dante said, his voice dropping into a rich, quiet baritone. "You were carrying a stack of architectural blueprints for a small restoration firm. It was pouring snow. A homeless man was sitting near the fountain, freezing. You stopped, took off your own scarf, wrapped it around his hands, and gave him your lunch."

Elena blinked, stunned. "You... you saw that?"

"I see everything that happens in my city," Dante replied quietly. "And for six months, I watched you work twelve hours a day, walk with your head held high, and suffer in silence to protect your brother. You have more courage in your small finger than all the corrupt politicians and mob captains in New York."

May you like

He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently brushing a dark strand of hair away from her bruised cheekbone.

"You are in my house now, Elena," Dante whispered. "No one will ever strike you again. No one will ever threaten your family. That is my promise to you."
