Chapter 14 - The Fall of the Lion

The trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange at 9:15 AM was an arena of pure chaos.

Traders in brightly colored jackets shouted over one another as digital monitors flickered with millions of transactions per second. On the big screen above the main floor, the ticker symbol for MORETTI FINANCIAL (MRTI) was falling rapidly.

9:29 AM. One minute before the opening bell.

In his luxury hotel penthouse overlooking Central Park, Julian Vance sat with a glass of champagne in his hand, watching the ticker screen on his wall.

"Thirty seconds," Julian murmured to himself, a cold, vengeful smile gracing his lips. "Fifteen years of waiting, Father. Today, I tear down Dante Moretti’s empire."

9:30 AM. The opening bell chimed loud and clear across the exchange floor!

Immediately, massive sell orders flooded the system. MRTI stock plunged from $450 to $410 in under two minutes.

"Margin call at four hundred!" Julian laughed, swirling his champagne. "Dump another five hundred thousand shares! Break them!"

Suddenly, the screen blinked. The rapid cascade of sell orders abruptly halted.

The ticker symbol MRTI froze at $402.10.

Then, a bright red banner flashed across the top of the financial news network:

[URGENT: MEDICI HERITAGE TRUST FREEZES ALL CAPITAL ALLOCATIONS TO VANCE CAPITAL INVESTMENT GROUP DUE TO SUSPECTED FRAUD AND SECURITIES MANIPULATION.]

Julian dropped his champagne glass. The crystal shattered on the marble floor, spraying domestic wine across his shoes. "What?! What happened?!"

"Julian!" his trader screamed into the phone line. "The Medici Trust just executed an emergency margin recall on us! They revoked our credit line! Our short positions are exposed—we have to buy back three million shares of Moretti stock RIGHT NOW or face immediate bankruptcy!"

Before Julian could even process the words, a massive green spike hit the screen.

MRTI shot up from $402 to $480... then $550... then $620!

"Who is buying?!" Julian shrieked, clutching his head. "Who is buying that much stock?!"

The news anchor on the television screen spoke in a steady, crisp tone: "In an unprecedented turn of events, Elena Moretti, strategic co-chair of Moretti Holdings, executed a buyback campaign backed by a syndicate of Asian and European private investors, acquiring eighty percent of all floating shares. Vance Capital has suffered a complete financial wipeout estimated at 1.8 billion dollars."

Julian staggered back, collapsing into his leather armchair. His eyes were wide with shock, his breath coming in ragged hitches.

He was ruined. Penniless. Defeated not by Dante’s guns, but by a woman’s strategic stroke of a pen.

The doors to his luxury penthouse suite suddenly slammed open with a heavy thud.

Four men in immaculate dark suits walked into the room, led by Vincent. Behind them stood Dante Moretti, looking impeccably handsome in a tailored three-piece charcoal suit, his hands casually resting in his pockets.

Julian looked up, his face pale as death. "Moretti..."

Dante stepped into the luxurious apartment, his dark eyes fixed on the broken man in the chair. He didn't pull a weapon. He didn't shout. His presence alone filled the vast room with a quiet, suffocating authority.

"You spent ten years studying my father’s violence, Julian," Dante said smoothly, stopping three feet from Julian’s chair. "You assumed I was the same monster. You prepared for a war of bullets and blood."

Dante leaned down slightly, his dark eyes flashing with lethal satisfaction.

"You forgot that I married someone far smarter than me."

Julian trembled, his pride completely shattered. "What are you going to do to me? Kill me?"

"Kill you?" Dante laughed softly—a dark, melodic sound. "No, Julian. Dead men don't feel the weight of their failure. The federal authorities are downstairs right now with warrants for bank fraud, illegal mercenary deployment, and corporate sabotage. You will spend the next forty years in a maximum-security federal facility in upstate New York."

Dante turned his back on Julian, walking toward the exit door where Marcus was waiting with two federal agents.

"Take him away," Dante commanded quietly.

As Julian was handcuffed and led out of the suite in disgrace, Dante stood on the balcony overlooking Manhattan, the morning sun breaking through the clouds, bathing the city in pure golden light.
