Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By the following afternoon, news of the destruction of Tony Russo’s crew had sent shockwaves through the Five Boroughs.

Tony Russo had fled the city under the cover of dark, his illegal operations seized, his street captains arrested by federal authorities using anonymous financial tips supplied by Dante’s network, and his remaining enforcers scattered to the wind.

However, the vacuum created by Russo’s sudden fall stirred a deeper, more dangerous beast: the Commission of the Five Families.

At 3:00 PM, Dante stood in his grand library, looking out over the sprawling estate gardens. Standing behind him were Vincent and three senior lieutenants, their faces grave.

"Don Salvatore wants a council meeting tonight," Vincent reported, adjusting his jacket. "He’s furious, Boss. Salvatore claims you violated the 1994 Treaty by wiping out Russo’s crew without a formal vote from the High Table."

Salvatore "The Bull" Lucchesi was the seventy-year-old patriarch of the West Side family—a ruthless remnant of the old mob who had long resented Dante Moretti’s modern, corporate dominance over the city.

"Salvatore doesn't care about the treaty," Dante said, turning slowly to face his men. "He cares because Tony Russo was paying him a twenty percent kickback on those illegal warehouse ledgers. When I shut Russo down, I cut off Salvatore’s private slush fund."

"Salvatore is bringing two dozen armed men to the neutrality zone at the Brooklyn Navy Yard," Vincent warned. "He thinks he can force you to pay restitution for Russo’s lost territory, or demand that you hand over Elena Castellano’s brother as leverage."

Dante’s eyes flared with a lethal, terrifying spark.

"If Salvatore mentions Elena or her brother," Dante said, every word dropping like lead, "he will not leave the Navy Yard alive."

"Boss, if you kill Don Salvatore, it’s an all-out syndicate war," Vincent cautioned carefully. "The whole East Coast will burn."

"Then let it burn," Dante replied smoothly, walking over to his desk and picking up a gold fountain pen. "Prepare the motorcade. We leave at seven."

Meanwhile, on the upper floor of the estate, Elena was walking slowly through the art gallery, trying to adjust to her new reality. Her ribs still throbbed, but her mind was consumed with a growing sense of responsibility.

She had spent the morning with Michael, who was weeping with gratitude and shame for putting his sister through such hell. But Elena knew that as long as Dante was fighting her battles, the danger was simply shifting onto his shoulders.

She walked into Dante’s office just as Vincent was leaving.

Dante looked up from his paperwork, his cold expression instantly softening as he saw her standing in the doorway.

"Elena," he said, standing up and walking around his desk. "You should be resting."

"I heard Vincent," Elena said, stepping into the room despite the ache in her side. "You're going to Brooklyn tonight to meet the other crime bosses. Because of what happened to me."

Dante stopped in front of her, his tall, imposing frame casting a protective shadow over her.

"It is my business, Elena. You don't need to worry about the Commission."

"It is my worry!" Elena insisted, her dark eyes flashing with fierce emotion as she looked up at him. "You saved my life, Dante. You saved my brother. I won't let you get ambushed or killed by these men because you protected me!"

Dante stared down at her, a rare, breathtaking smile touching the corner of his lips.

"Do you really think those old men in Brooklyn can harm me, Elena?"

"They're dangerous!"

"So am I," Dante whispered, taking her soft hand in his large, calloused palm and bringing it to his lips. "In fact, I am the most dangerous thing this city has ever produced. Trust me."
