Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

For two months, peace settled over the Moretti estate like a golden blanket.

Spring arrived in New York, blooming across the manicured lawns of Westchester. Elena’s ribs had completely healed, the bruises on her face were long gone, and her natural, radiant beauty flourished under the care, security, and luxury of Dante’s world.

Her brother Michael had been enrolled in a prestigious business university in Boston, his debts erased and his future secured under Dante’s personal sponsorship. Elena herself had been given full creative freedom and funding to establish her own architectural restoration foundation, helping restore historic buildings across the city.

However, beneath the golden peace, an old ghost was stirring in the dark.

Tony Russo had not fled to Florida as everyone believed. Driven mad by the destruction of his crew and his humiliation at the hands of Dante Moretti, Russo had aligned himself with an international mercenary syndicate operating out of Eastern Europe.

On an April evening, while Dante was attending a high-level corporate board meeting at the Moretti Plaza in Manhattan, a tactical breach occurred at the estate’s outer perimeter.

Elena was in the conservatory, sketching blueprints for a new community project, when the estate’s emergency sirens suddenly began to wail!

RED ALERT. PERIMETER BREACH AT SOUTH GATE.

Before Elena could stand up, two of her dedicated personal bodyguards—assigned by Dante—rushed into the room with sidearms drawn.

"Miss Castellano! We need to move you to the safe room immediately!" the lead guard yelled.

Before they could reach the hallway, a heavy smoke grenade shattered the glass dome of the conservatory, filling the room with thick, blinding white gas!

Gunfire erupted outside the room. Elena covered her mouth, coughing violently, trying to retreat toward the rear exit, but a heavy hand grabbed her shoulder through the smoke, pulling her backward!

"Got you, you little bitch!" a raspy, crazed voice snarled.

Elena turned, recognizing the wild, bloodshot eyes and scarred face of Tony Russo through the smoke. He looked thin, unhinged, and desperate, holding a silenced pistol against her side.

"You ruined me!" Russo screamed, dragging her toward a broken French door where a black getaway van was idling near the lawn. "Dante took everything I had because of you! Now let's see how much he pays to get your corpse back!"

Elena felt a surge of terrifying fear, but she remembered Dante’s words: You have more courage than all the corrupt men in this city.

Instead of panicking, Elena waited until Russo dragged her past a stone pedestal holding a heavy bronze statue. Using all her strength, she grabbed the statue and shoved it backward, slamming the heavy bronze directly onto Russo’s foot!

Russo let out a howl of agony, dropping his grip on her!

Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy marble flower pot and smashed it across Russo’s face, sending the mobster crashing into the broken glass on the floor!

She turned to run toward the house, but three mercenary enforcers emerged from the smoke, cutting off her path!
