Chapter 11: The Voice From The Past
The new trial date came sooner than expected. Victoria sat at the defense table, head high, smiling at the cameras like she was the victim.
When Nathan’s team played the recordings from Elena, the courtroom went quiet. But Victoria just laughed.
"That’s old footage! Taken out of context! He was abusive too—he said those things to scare me!"
Then the judge asked if there was anyone else who could speak to her behavior. For a moment, no one moved. Then a woman stood up at the back of the room—Lila, Victoria’s first daughter, now twelve years old.
"I can speak," she said clearly.
Victoria’s smile vanished.
Lila walked to the stand and told her story: the locked rooms, the cold floors, the way Victoria told her no one would ever love her if she told the truth. When she finished, she looked straight at Victoria.
"You think silence keeps you safe," she said. "But eventually, everyone finds their voice."
Outside the courtroom, a crowd had gathered. They had seen the photos, heard the stories, watched the children speak. And for the first time, they weren’t shouting questions at Nathan. They were cheering for the kids.
