Chapter 5 - THE SENTINEL's VOW

Two weeks later.
The dark clouds that had hung over Chicago for a month finally cleared, allowing a brilliant, warm autumn sun to wash across the Moretti estate.
The atmosphere in the grand house had completely transformed. The heavy, oppressive tension that had lingered during Valentina’s presence was gone, replaced by a quiet, serene peace.
In the sun-drenched conservatory on the east side of the house, six-year-old Lena was sitting at a small wooden table, happily coloring a picture book with a brand-new set of sixty-four crayons.
Beside her, Sophia Bellini was carefully wiping down the glass tea set on a serving tray. She wore a simple, elegant navy-blue dress—no longer a servant's uniform, but the attire of a private estate coordinator, a position Lorenzo had officially created for her three days ago with a salary four times higher than her previous wage.
Her face had completely healed, leaving no trace of the injury she had suffered.
The heavy glass doors of the conservatory slid open.
Lorenzo walked into the room. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket or his formal necktie. He wore a comfortable dark cashmere sweater, his dark hair slightly messy in the warm afternoon breeze, a soft smile touching his lips as he saw the child playing.
"Mr. Moretti," Sophia said quickly, stepping forward to bow her head respectfully.
"Sophia," Lorenzo stopped her with a small gesture of his hand. "How many times must I tell you? In this house, you don't bow to anyone."
Sophia smiled faintly, a blush rising to her cheeks. "It's a hard habit to break, sir."
"Call me Lorenzo," he said softly.
Lena put down her bright red crayon, looked up, and gasped with delight. "Uncle Lorenzo!"
She scrambled off her chair, running across the marble floor in her tiny sneakers, threw her arms around his legs, and gave him a big hug.
Lorenzo let out a deep, warm laugh—a sound so genuine and relaxed that Sophia stood frozen in awe. In the two years she had worked at the estate, she had never heard the feared mafia boss laugh like that.
Lorenzo bent down on one knee, reaching out to ruffle Lena’s dark curls.
"Did you finish your coloring book, little one?" Lorenzo asked her gently.
"I painted the roses white!" Lena beamed, pointing back at her table. "Just like the ones you dropped in the hallway!"
Lorenzo’s expression softened, a deep, meaningful look passing between him and Sophia.
"Those roses were ruined, Lena," Lorenzo said gently, looking up at Sophia. "So today... we are planting new ones."
He stood up, looking at Sophia with an intensity that made her heart flutter in her chest.
"Sophia," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a rich, earnest baritone. "I want to thank you. Not just for saving my life two weeks ago, but for reminding me what real courage looks like."
Sophia took a step toward him, her hands clasped together. "You gave me and my daughter a safe home, Lorenzo. You gave us respect when everyone else treated us like ghosts. I am the one who should be thanking you."
Lorenzo took a slow step closer to her until the distance between them closed. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently gathering her hands in his.
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. His hands were large, covered in subtle scars, but his touch was lighter than a feather.
"I spent years looking for a woman who could stand beside me in this dark world," Lorenzo whispered, his dark eyes searching hers with profound sincerity. "I thought I needed someone from a powerful family. Someone with an aristocratic name and a bloodline approved by the Commission."
He shook his head slowly, a tender smile touching the corner of his mouth.
"I was a fool," Lorenzo murmured. "Power doesn't come from a family name, Sophia. It comes from character. It comes from love. It comes from a woman who stands in front of a whip to protect her child and tells the truth even when her voice trembles."
Sophia’s eyes welled with tears, but this time they were tears of pure, overwhelming joy. "Lorenzo... I'm just a woman who cleans rooms..."
"No," Lorenzo interrupted gently, raising one hand to stroke her soft cheek, his thumb catching a falling tear. "You are the woman who saved my soul. And if you will let me... I want to spend the rest of my life protecting yours."
Lena ran over, grabbing both of their hands, looking up at them with huge, bright brown eyes. "Are you going to be my daddy now, Uncle Lorenzo?"
Lorenzo looked down at the child, then up at Sophia, his heart feeling fuller than it ever had in his entire life.

"If your mama agrees," Lorenzo whispered softly, "I would be the proudest man in the world."
Sophia let out a tearful, happy laugh, throwing her arms around Lorenzo’s neck, pulling him down into a warm, passionate embrace that sealed their promise under the golden light of the afternoon sun.
