Chapter 3 - THE BLUE FOLDER

At 11:00 PM, the heavy mahogany doors of Lorenzo’s private study swung open.
Valentina stepped into the room, flanked by two of her personal Ricci bodyguards. She had changed into a striking white pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, aggressive ponytail, her eyes bright with defiance.
She expected to find Lorenzo pacing in anger or sitting at his desk crying over a broken engagement.
Instead, she found him sitting casually in a dark leather armchair by the fireplace, drinking a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. On the low coffee table between them sat a single item: a thick, blue paper folder.
Valentina’s eyes locked onto the folder, a momentary slip of horror crossing her refined features.
"You took it out of my desk," Lorenzo said softly, swirling the amber liquid in his glass.
Valentina swallowed hard, attempting to regain her composure. She gestured for her two bodyguards to step forward, but before they could move, the shadows behind the curtains shifted.
Four Moretti heavy-hitters stepped out, their silenced handguns pointed directly at the backs of the Ricci guards' heads. Without a word, Dante stepped up behind them, disarming both men with swift, practiced efficiency, throwing their weapons onto the rug, and shoving them out into the hallway.
The heavy door was slammed shut and locked from the outside.
Valentina was left standing alone in the center of the room, her high heels sinking slightly into the thick carpet.
"Lorenzo," she said, her voice strained. "This is insane. You are assaulting my private detail! My father will have the Commission convened by morning!"
"Your father doesn't know about this, does he, Valentina?" Lorenzo asked, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "This wasn't Giancarlo’s idea. This was yours and your Uncle Mario's."
Valentina’s face drained of color. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
Lorenzo set his glass down on the table with a soft clink. He picked up the blue folder, opening it slowly.
"Forged bill of lading for container ship The Baltic Star," Lorenzo read aloud, his voice dripping with icy sarcasm. "Fake wire transfer receipts showing five million dollars sent from my offshore accounts to human trafficking cartels in Odesa. Beautiful work, Valentina. The typography is almost identical to my chief accountant’s style."
He looked up at her, his dark eyes void of all warmth.
"You knew I would never agree to merge our logistics networks with Mario’s dirty operations," Lorenzo said. "So you decided to eliminate me. Frame me for the one crime the Commission considers an unforgivable offense, take over the Moretti empire through our marriage contract, and hand the keys to your uncle."
Valentina backed away until her spine hit the heavy wooden bookshelf behind her.
"You can't prove any of this," she whispered, her arrogant facade finally crumbling into raw panic. "It's your word against mine. My father is the senior member of the triad! The other families will side with us!"
Lorenzo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black recording device. He pressed play.
A high-pitched, crystal-clear audio recording began to fill the room.
"If you speak to Lorenzo, your daughter becomes a problem I will solve."
Valentina’s own voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls, sharp, cruel, and unmistakable.
Then came Sophia’s trembling voice: "I won't say anything. Please. Just leave Lena alone."
And then Valentina again: "Then stop pretending you have a choice. You are staff. You clean rooms. You wash glasses. You do not carry secrets out of them."
Lorenzo stopped the recording.
The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.
"Do you know what the Commission’s code says about threatening the family of a made man’s household, Valentina?" Lorenzo asked softly. "Do you know what happens to someone who uses innocent children as collateral in a corporate takeover?"
Valentina’s knees buckled. She slid down the front of the bookshelf, sitting on the floor in her pristine white pantsuit, looking up at him with wide, terrifyingly vulnerable eyes.
"Lorenzo... please," she begged, tears finally breaking past her dark mascara, streaming down her cheeks. "It was Mario! He forced me! He told me he would kill my father if I didn't help him take over your docks! I love you, Lorenzo! I was doing it to save my family!"
Lorenzo stood up from his leather chair. He walked over to her, kneeling down so his face was level with hers.
He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a loose strand of dark hair behind her ear.
"You don't know how to love anything, Valentina," Lorenzo whispered gently. "You only know how to consume."
He stood back up, adjusting his cuffs.
"Dante."
The door unlocked, and Dante stepped inside.
"Take Miss Ricci to the basement holding rooms," Lorenzo commanded flatly. "Stripped of all personal items, phones, and jewelry. Contact Don Giancarlo Ricci. Tell him his daughter has committed treason against the Moretti family, and I am calling an emergency tribunal at the Drake Hotel at three in the morning."
Valentina began to scream, kicking and thrashing as Dante and two heavy operatives dragged her out of the study, her expensive heels scraping violently against the wood floor.
Lorenzo picked up his glass of scotch, walked over to the fireplace, and tossed the blue folder directly into the leaping orange flames.

He watched the forged documents turn to ash, his jaw set like iron.
"Now," Lorenzo murmured to himself, "we deal with Uncle Mario."
