Chapter 1 - THE SCATTERED PETALS

The heavy oak door swung open with a quiet, lethal smoothness.

Valentina Ricci froze, her hand still raised in the air, her manicured fingers curled. On the velvet sofa in the corner of the private dressing suite, Sophia Bellini cowered, pressing a damp apron against a red, rapidly swelling welt on her cheek. Her eyes were wide, filled with a suffocating mixture of terror and shame.

Lorenzo Moretti stood in the doorway.

He didn't wear the explosive rage that men in his line of work usually wore. His face was a mask of carved stone, pale and unyielding. But his eyes—dark, abyssal brown—seemed to consume all the light in the luxurious room. He looked at Valentina’s hand. He looked at Sophia’s bruised face. Then he looked at the shattered porcelain cup lying in a puddle of Earl Grey tea on the Persian rug.

"Lorenzo," Valentina breathed, her tone shifting in a fraction of a second from razor-sharp malice to delicate, trembling surprise. Her hand dropped to her side. "You're... you're home early, darling. I wasn't expecting you until seven."

Lorenzo stepped into the room. He didn't answer her. He walked past his fiancée as if she were a ghost, stopping directly in front of Sophia.

The maid tried to stand, her hands shaking so violently she dropped the apron. "Mr. Moretti... I... I broke the cup. I was clumsy. Miss Ricci was only—"

"Quiet, Sophia," Lorenzo said. His voice was terrifyingly soft, a low rumble that made the air feel heavy.

He reached down, offering a hand to the terrified woman. Sophia hesitated for a heartbeat before placing her trembling, work-calloused fingers into his palm. Lorenzo gently pulled her up from the sofa. He looked closely at her face, taking in the red imprint on her cheek, the tear-stained dirt on her collar, and the quiet dignity of a mother who had taken a strike to protect her child.

"Lena is in the foyer with my men," Lorenzo told her gently. "She is safe. Go to her."

Sophia swallowed hard, a fresh sob escaping her throat. "Thank you, sir. I’m sorry... I’m so sorry—"

"Go," he repeated, his eyes softening just enough for her to nod and hurry past him out of the room.

The heavy door clicked shut behind her, leaving Lorenzo and Valentina alone in the vast, stifling suite.

Valentina smoothed her silk gown, taking a slow, steadying breath. She was the daughter of Don Giancarlo Ricci, one of the oldest and most traditional syndicate patriarchs in Chicago. She had been raised to manipulate men like Lorenzo—men of violence, pride, and strict codes. She put on a soft, wounded expression, stepping toward him with her arms outstretched.

"Lorenzo, sweet heart, you don't understand what happened," she said softly, her eyes glistening with rehearsed tears. "That girl... she was snooping through my private belongings. She was reading my private correspondence! I caught her red-handed. When I confronted her, she spoke to me with such disrespect... I lost my temper. It was just a small slap to maintain order in the house. You know how important discipline is for the staff."

Lorenzo turned to face her slowly. He looked down at his own hand, then up into her eyes.

"You threatened her daughter, Valentina," he said.

Valentina’s wounded expression flickered, a tiny sliver of annoyance breaking through her polite mask. "She’s a maid, Lorenzo! A servant! She was threatening to spread lies about me to you! I had to protect my dignity—our dignity!"

"What phone call?" Lorenzo asked.

Valentina went still. "What?"

"Sophia mentioned a phone call," Lorenzo stepped closer, his six-foot-four frame casting a long, suffocating shadow over her. "She said she overheard something that meant I was in danger. What did she hear, Valentina?"

"She heard nothing!" Valentina’s voice rose, a sharp edge returning to her tone. "She misinterpreted a call I was having with my father's estate manager about shipping logistics for our wedding! She’s an uneducated servant trying to create drama to get money out of you!"

Lorenzo reached into his pocket. He pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and hit a speed-dial button. He put it on speaker.

After two rings, Dante’s sharp voice came through the line. "Boss. Everything okay? You were supposed to be at the docks."

"Dante," Lorenzo said, keeping his eyes locked on Valentina’s pale face. "Bring Don Giancarlo Ricci’s private ledger files to my study immediately. And lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Not a car, not a delivery truck, not a Ricci guard."

Valentina gasped. "Lorenzo! What are you doing?! My father is your primary alliance partner! You can't lock down my quarters like I'm a prisoner!"

"Copy that, boss," Dante replied without hesitation. "Lockdown in effect."

Lorenzo ended the call, stepping toward the door.

"Lorenzo, wait!" Valentina rushed after him, grabbing his forearm. "You are letting a common housemaid destroy our marriage! Our families have signed a binding contract! The Commission approved this!"

Lorenzo stopped. He slowly looked down at her hand on his arm until she felt an icy shiver run down her spine and pulled her fingers back.

May you like

"The white roses I brought for you are lying on the floor in the hall, Valentina," Lorenzo said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Stepped on. Ruined. Just like our contract."

He walked out, slamming the heavy mahogany door behind him, leaving her screaming his name into the empty air.
