Chapter 4 - THE TRIBUNAL OF BLOOD AND SILENCE

The Drake Hotel's grand ballroom was bathed in cold, shadowy light at 3:15 AM.
Around the massive circular oak table sat the patriarchs of the Five Families of Chicago.
At the head sat Don Giancarlo Ricci—a seventy-year-old man with silver hair, sharp green eyes, and a face carved by fifty years of brutal survival in the syndicate. To his left sat his younger brother, Mario Ricci, wearing an expensive tailored suit, his hands resting calmly on the table, though his eyes darted nervously toward the heavy double doors.
The heavy doors groaned open.
Lorenzo Moretti walked into the room. He wore a tailored charcoal-grey suit, his posture straight, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute power.
Behind him came two of his lieutenants, dragging a bound and gagged Valentina. Her white pantsuit was stained, her hair wild, her eyes red from hours of weeping.
Don Giancarlo slammed his hand onto the table, standing up instantly, his face turning dark purple with fury.
"Lorenzo!" Giancarlo roared, his deep voice bouncing off the high ceilings. "What is the meaning of this insult?! You drag my daughter into the Commission chamber in chains like a common criminal?! Have you lost your mind?!"
The other bosses shifted in their chairs, exchange anxious, dark looks. In the syndicate, dragging a Don’s daughter into a tribunal without prior consent was a declaration of total war.
Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. He walked to the head of the table, stopping directly across from Don Giancarlo and Mario.
With a flick of his wrist, Lorenzo tossed a small digital audio recorder and a heavy stack of printed phone logs onto the center of the polished wood table.
"Read them, Giancarlo," Lorenzo said, his voice quiet, calm, and chillingly absolute.
Mario Ricci’s eyes narrowed. He made a subtle movement toward his inner jacket pocket, but Dante, standing near the doorway, raised a silenced weapon, resting the red laser sight directly on the center of Mario’s forehead.
"Don't move, Mario," Dante said smoothly. "You move a finger, and I clear your skull."
Don Giancarlo looked from Lorenzo to his daughter, who was trembling on her knees behind him, then down at the documents on the table.
With shaking hands, the old patriarch picked up the phone logs. He spent five long, silent minutes reading through the decrypted transcripts between Valentina and Mario—the plan to plant forged human trafficking files in Lorenzo's office, the plan to notify the FBI, the plan to assassinate Giancarlo himself once the takeover was complete, and the brutal assault on the housemaid and her six-year-old child.
As Giancarlo read, the color slowly drained from his face until he looked like a corpse.
He hit play on the audio recorder.
Valentina’s cold, arrogant voice filled the silent ballroom: "If you speak to Lorenzo, your daughter becomes a problem I will solve."
Giancarlo dropped the recorder. He turned his head slowly, looking down at his younger brother, Mario.
"Is this true?" Giancarlo whispered, his voice cracking with profound heartbreak. "You... you planned to frame Lorenzo and take my chair?"
Mario’s calm mask finally shattered. He stood up, knocking his leather chair backward, glaring wildly at the old man.
"You are old, Giancarlo!" Mario screamed, pointing a finger at his brother. "You are soft! You were going to hand half our shipping assets to the Morettis through this pathetic marriage! Lorenzo was getting stronger every day! In two years, the Ricci family would have been nothing more than a subsidiary of the Moretti empire!"
Mario looked around the table at the other syndicate bosses.
"I did what needed to be done for our family's survival!" Mario shouted. "Lorenzo is a threat to all of us! He acts like a king!"
Old Don Giancarlo closed his eyes, a heavy tear trailing down the deep wrinkles of his cheek. He slowly reached into his pocket, pulled out a gold fountain pen, and signed his name at the bottom of the tribunal execution warrant that Lorenzo had placed on the table.
Giancarlo looked up at Lorenzo, his eyes filled with immense sorrow.
"The Ricci family surrenders all rights to Pier 14," Giancarlo said, his voice hollowed by grief. "And I... I leave the punishment of these traitors in your hands, Don Lorenzo."
Mario gasped, backing away toward the windows. "Giancarlo! I am your brother! You can't let him do this!"
"You betrayed our blood, Mario," Giancarlo whispered, turning his back on him. "And you used a child to do it. You are no brother of mine."
Lorenzo gestured to Dante.
"Take Mario to the docks," Lorenzo commanded flatly. "And as for Valentina..."
He looked down at his former fiancée, who was weeping uncontrollably on the floor, looking up at him with desperate eyes.
"She will spend the rest of her life in a convent in southern Italy," Lorenzo declared. "Stripped of the Ricci name, stripped of all wealth, and never allowed to set foot on American soil again."
Valentina let out a muffled scream as two Moretti soldiers lifted her from the floor and dragged her toward the side exit, her reign as Chicago's mafia princess coming to a dark, permanent end.

Lorenzo turned back to the remaining bosses sitting at the table.
"The war is over before it began," Lorenzo announced, his dark eyes sweeping the room with absolute authority. "The docks are mine. The city is quiet. Go home."
