Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE RECITALS

By 8:00 PM, the Moretti estate was under a complete tactical lockdown.

floodlights illuminated the four-acre grounds, casting long shadows across the immaculate manicured lawns. Men in dark suits armed with submachine guns stood at every gate. Inside the main house, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

In the private family wing, far from Valentina’s quarters, Lorenzo sat on the edge of a soft velvet chair inside the guest suite.

Across from him, six-year-old Lena was eating a bowl of warm soup that the executive chef had prepared for her. Her little eyes were still puffy, but her braid had been neatly redone by her mother, who stood quietly behind her, a fresh ice pack pressed against her bruised cheek.

Lorenzo had stripped off his suit jacket, rolling his sleeves up over his dark, tattooed forearms. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, keeping his voice as gentle as possible.

"Sophia," Lorenzo said. "Tell me everything you heard. Don't leave out a single word. You don't have to be afraid anymore. Nobody under this roof will ever touch you or Lena again."

Sophia took a shuddering breath, looking at her daughter before turning her eyes to the head of the Moretti family.

"I was cleaning the master suite's adjoining balcony, Mr. Moretti," Sophia began, her voice trembling slightly. "The glass doors were slightly open because of the heat. Miss Ricci was in her dressing room. She was speaking on an encrypted satellite phone. She... she didn't know I was outside."

"Who was she talking to?" Lorenzo asked.

"She called him 'Uncle Mario,'" Sophia said.

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. Mario Ricci—Giancarlo’s younger brother, a ruthless warlord who managed the Ricci family's illicit smuggling operations out of Detroit.

"What did she say to Mario?"

"She was talking about the shipment arriving at Pier 14 tomorrow night," Sophia continued, clutching her hands together. "She said... she said the leak had been set up perfectly. She said that once you arrived at the docks to inspect the cargo, the Federal agents would receive an anonymous tip with your precise location and the fake manifests she planted in your office."

Lorenzo felt a cold, sharp rage settle into his ribs.

"She planted manifests in my office?" he asked quietly.

"Yes, sir," Sophia whispered. "Two nights ago, while you were at the Commission meeting in New York. She used a master key she stole from your housekeeper's ring. She put a blue folder inside the bottom drawer of your wooden desk. She told her uncle on the phone that the folder contains forged documents linking you to human trafficking operations in Eastern Europe."

Lorenzo’s hand tightened around the armrest of his chair until the leather groaned under the pressure.

Human trafficking was the one line Lorenzo Moretti had never crossed. It was the one crime the Commission punished with immediate execution, and it was the one accusation that would completely ruin his reputation with the public, the authorities, and his own loyal men.

If the FBI raided Pier 14 while he was there and found those blue files in his home... he wouldn't just go to prison for life. His entire family empire would be dismantled, and the Ricci family would step into the vacuum to take over Chicago.

"Why didn't you come to me immediately, Sophia?" Lorenzo asked softly.

Sophia bowed her head, tears filling her eyes again. "I tried, sir! But Miss Ricci saw me coming out of the study that night. She began watching me. She took Lena’s school schedule... she told me that if I made a single move toward your office, Lena wouldn't make it off the school bus."

Lorenzo stood up slowly. The physical pressure radiating from him was immense, but his expression toward Sophia remained profoundly gentle.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a heavy gold signet ring featuring the Moretti crest, and placed it on the side table beside Lena’s soup bowl.

"Sophia," Lorenzo said smoothly. "This ring belongs to my family. As long as this ring is in your possession, every soldier, driver, and captain in the Moretti syndicate answers to your call. You and Lena are under my personal protection for the rest of your lives."

Sophia stared at the glittering gold ring, her lips trembling. "Mr. Moretti... I’m just a maid..."

"You are a woman who saved my life and protected my honor when the woman I was supposed to marry was trying to sell me to the federal government," Lorenzo replied, his voice echoing with absolute sincerity. "You are far more than staff to me now."

He turned to Dante, who was standing near the door with a grim expression.

"Dante."

"Yes, boss?"

"Take Sophia and Lena to my private estate in Lake Forest. Put six of our best men on the perimeter. Nobody enters without my personal voice authorization."

"Right away, boss," Dante nodded, gesturing for Sophia and her daughter to follow him.

Lorenzo watched them leave, then walked over to the tall windows overlooking the dark courtyard.

His fiancée had come into his house, taken his ring, struck his staff, threatened a six-year-old child, and plotted to lock him in a federal prison for the rest of his life.

Lorenzo pulled a thin silver lighter from his pocket, flicking the flame on and off in the dark room.

"It's time to pay the Ricci family a visit," he whispered into the quiet night.
