Chapter 9 - THE CHASE ON THE CLIFF

Above them, the fight was not over.
Julian, realizing his sister had abandoned him and that the police were downstairs, grew desperate. He swung the tire iron wildly, catching Arthur across the forearm. The bone cracked with a dull sound, and Arthur fell to one knee, gasping in pain.
Julian didn't try to finish the fight. He turned and ran toward the window at the end of the hallway, which led to the second-story balcony.
"He's going for the roof!" Arthur yelled down to the police, his voice strained as he clutched his broken arm.
The officers scrambled up the stairs, but Julian was already gone, scaling the trellis on the side of the house with the agility of a desperate animal. He dropped onto the hood of Arthur’s SUV parked in the driveway, the metal buckling under his weight.
He scrambled into the driver's seat of Victoria’s silver SUV, which still had the keys in the ignition from her planned escape.
The engine roared to life.
"Stop!" one of the officers screamed from the balcony, firing two warning shots into the air, but the SUV tore down the gravel driveway, smashing through the locked iron gates of the estate and disappearing into the rainy, dark mountain road.
"We have units stationed at the base of the mountain," the detective said, running down the stairs to his radio. "He won't make it to the highway."
Arthur staggered down the stairs, his face pale from the pain in his arm, but his eyes instantly searching the foyer. He saw Victoria being handcuffed by an officer, her face pressed against the cold marble floor she had spent five years pretending to own.
"Where is Emma?" Arthur gasped.
"I'm here, Daddy," a small voice called out.
Emma was standing at the top of the stairs, her small hand holding Maria’s. Maria had bypassed the paramedics the moment she entered the house, running straight up the back stairs to secure the little girl.

Arthur ran up the steps, wrapping his good arm around his daughter, pulling her and Maria into a tight, fierce hug.
"We're safe," Arthur whispered, his tears finally falling. "We're finally safe."
