Chapter 6 - THE CONFRONTATION AT MIDNIGHT

By 1:00 AM, the Sterling mansion was surrounded by a deceptive, heavy silence.

Victoria stood in the master bedroom, her hands shaking as she packed a leather designer duffel bag with her jewelry, cash from the wall safe, and her passport. She knew the game was up. The moment Maria recovered and spoke to Arthur, the police would be involved.

She had already destroyed the medical report, burning the papers in the fireplace of her private dressing room, watching the evidence of her crime turn to harmless grey ash. But she needed to leave before Arthur returned from the hospital with Maria.

"Going somewhere?"

The voice came from the doorway.

Victoria gasped, dropping a diamond necklace onto the bed as she spun around.

Arthur was standing there. He had not gone to the hospital. He had sent Maria in an ambulance with his personal security team, while he returned to the house to secure his daughter.

"Arthur," Victoria said, quickly recovering her composure and forcing a soft, wounded look onto her face. "You startled me. I was... I was packing a few things. After the way you humiliated me tonight, I felt it would be best if I stayed at a hotel for a few days to give us some space."

"You're not going to a hotel, Victoria," Arthur said. He walked into the room, locking the heavy mahogany door behind him. The sound of the key turning in the lock was like the firing of a starting pistol.

"What is the meaning of this?" Victoria demanded, her voice rising. "You can't lock me in here! I will call the police!"

"Please do," Arthur said, pulling his own phone from his pocket and placing it on the nightstand. "Let’s call them together. We can discuss the sudden death of my first wife, the hidden correspondence from her physician, and the physical assault of my Executive House Director in the attic tonight."

Victoria’s eyes darted to the phone, then back to Arthur. "You have no proof of anything. The doctor's letter is gone. Maria fell in the attic—she's an old woman, Arthur, she’s clumsy. She probably tripped in the dark and made up that ridiculous story to punish me for trying to fire her."

"I don't need the letter," Arthur said softly. He stepped closer, his eyes burning with an intensity that made Victoria take a step back until her spine hit the heavy oak post of the bed. "I called Dr. Harrison’s office on my way back from the hospital. He’s retired now, but he remembers Helena’s case perfectly. He kept duplicates of all his medical findings in his private archive. He’s delivering them to the state prosecutor's office as we speak."

Victoria's face drained of color. The confidence that had sustained her for years collapsed in an instant.

"You think you're safe because you burned the papers in my fireplace?" Arthur continued, pointing to the faint smell of smoke still lingering in the room. "You’re a fool, Victoria. You married me for my money, but you forgot that I built my company by knowing every single detail of my operations. I know exactly what you are."

Victoria’s hand slowly reached behind her, her fingers searching the top of the vanity table for anything she could use as a weapon. Her hand brushed against a heavy, silver-backed hairbrush.

"I gave you everything," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking. "I comforted you when she died. I took care of this house."

"You murdered the mother of my child," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "And you will spend the rest of your life in a concrete cell."

With a scream of pure rage, Victoria lunged at him, the heavy silver brush raised high.
