Chapter 11 - THE LIGHT IN THE HOUSE

Two years later, the autumn wind rustled the golden leaves of the massive oak trees surrounding the Sterling estate.
Emma, now nine years old, sat at the kitchen island, her homework spread out before her. She was laughing as Maria helped her decorate a batch of fresh sugar cookies, getting white icing all over her apron.
Arthur walked into the kitchen, his arm fully healed, his face relaxed and younger than it had looked in a decade. He carried a large, beautifully framed painting—a portrait of Helena, Emma, and himself, painted during a summer trip to the coast when Emma was just a baby.
"Where should we hang this, Maria?" Arthur asked, smiling.
Maria wiped her hands on her apron, looking at the painting with tears of joy in her eyes. "Right in the center of the grand foyer, Mr. Sterling. Right where everyone who enters this house can see what love looks like."
"Daddy," Emma said, running over to hug his waist. "Can we have a picnic under the oak tree this weekend? Maria says the weather is going to be perfect."
"We can do whatever you want, sweetheart," Arthur said, kissing the top of her head.

He looked at Maria, and then at his daughter. The shadows of the past had finally been driven from the corners of their lives, replaced by a deep, enduring peace.
They had survived the storm, and as the warm sunlight streamed through the clean, open windows of the kitchen, they knew that their home was finally, truly whole.
