Chapter 5 - ARTHUR'S AWAKENING

When Arthur returned to his study after his business calls, he felt a persistent, nagging sensation of dread.

The ease with which Victoria had attempted to discard Maria had opened his eyes to a side of his wife he had spent years ignoring. He had been so consumed by his work, by his grief over Helena, and by the demands of managing his corporate empire that he had allowed Victoria to systematically take over every aspect of his private life.

He sat at his desk, staring at a framed photograph of Helena that still sat in his drawer—hidden away because Victoria had complained that seeing it "hindered their healing process."

"What have I done?" Arthur muttered to himself, rubbing his temples.

He stood up, intending to go to the kitchen to get a glass of water. As he walked down the dimly lit hallway of the second floor, he noticed that the door to Emma’s room was slightly ajar.

He stepped inside. Emma was sleeping peacefully, but Maria was nowhere to be seen. Usually, Maria stayed in the rocking chair beside Emma’s bed until late in the evening to ensure the little girl didn't wake up from her frequent nightmares.

Arthur walked back into the hallway. "Maria?" he called out softly.

No response.

He descended the stairs to the kitchen. The lights were off. He checked the staff quarters at the back of the estate. Maria’s room was empty, her bed neatly made.

A faint sound from above caught his attention—a dull, rhythmic thudding coming from the upper levels of the house.

Arthur walked back up the stairs, past the bedrooms, to the narrow door that led to the attic. The door was unlocked. A thin sliver of light was visible from the top of the stairs.

He climbed the steps quickly, his heart rate accelerating.

As he reached the attic, the beam of his phone’s flashlight illuminated a horrifying scene.

Maria was slumped on the floor, a dark trickle of blood running down the side of her face. She was conscious but disoriented, her hands weakly pressing against her head.

"Maria!" Arthur cried, rushing over to her and lifting her shoulders. "What happened? Did you fall?"

"Mr. Sterling..." Maria gasped, her eyes struggling to focus on him. "She... Victoria. She has the letter. The doctor... Helena..."

"What are you talking about?" Arthur asked, his chest tightening as a cold sweat broke out across his forehead.

"The attic... the black bin," Maria whispered, pointing a shaking finger toward the corner. "Victoria took the envelope. She killed Helena, Arthur. She poisoned her with thallium. The doctor wrote to you... but she hid the letter."

Arthur froze. The name thallium struck him like a physical blow.

In the final weeks of Helena's illness, the doctors had been baffled by the rapid loss of her hair, her severe neurological pain, and the ultimate failure of her cardiovascular system. They had called it an atypical presentation of a rare autoimmune disease. But Arthur, who had a background in chemical engineering before taking over his family's logistics firm, knew exactly what thallium did to the human body.

It was tasteless, odorless, and perfectly mirrored the symptoms of a natural, degenerative illness if administered in small, consistent doses.

He looked at Maria's head wound. "Where is Victoria now?"

"I don't know," Maria moaned. "She took the files. She knows... she knows I know."

Arthur helped Maria to her feet, his voice turning deadly cold. "We’re going to the hospital. And then, I am going to end this."
