Chapter 2 - THE TABLE TURNS

The air in the dining room grew so cold and heavy that the faint hum of the central heating unit sounded like a distant, roaring engine.
Arthur sat perfectly still, his eyes locked onto his wife, Victoria. His fingers, which had been loosely resting around his crystal wine glass, tightened until his knuckles turned a sharp, bloodless white. He did not look angry in the traditional sense; there was no yelling, no wild gestures. Instead, a terrifying, quiet clarity settled over his features—a look Victoria had only ever seen him use in the boardroom when he was about to systematically dismantle a competitor.
Victoria gasped, her throat dry, her perfectly painted lips trembling as she tried to form a coherent defense. "Arthur... she’s a child. She doesn't understand. She’s being manipulated. You can’t possibly take the word of a seven-year-old over mine! Maria has clearly coached her to say these things to save her job!"
"Coached her?" Arthur’s voice was a low, smooth baritone, entirely devoid of the warmth he usually reserved for his family. He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the polished mahogany table. "Victoria, Emma is seven. She doesn't know how to fabricate a detailed defense of a household employee on the spot. But she does know when she is being lied to. And more importantly, so do I."
He turned his gaze slowly toward Maria. The older woman was standing near the sideboard, her hands clasped tightly in front of her crisp apron, her shoulders trembling slightly. She had worked for Arthur’s family since before his first wife—Emma’s late mother—had passed away. She was the only remaining link to the warmth this house had once possessed.
"Maria," Arthur said, his tone softening just a fraction.
"Yes, Mr. Sterling?" she whispered, her voice cracking.
"You’ve been with us for five years. You were here when my wife was sick. You helped me carry Emma when she was nothing but a fragile bundle. Why didn't you tell me that my wife was blaming you for Emma's mistakes?"
Maria swallowed hard, her eyes darting nervously toward Victoria, whose gaze was practically shooting daggers across the table. "I... I didn't want to cause trouble, sir. Mrs. Sterling is the mistress of the house. It is my job to make sure this home runs smoothly, not to complain or cause friction between you and your wife. I thought... I thought if I just worked harder, if I kept everything perfect, she would see that I only want the best for Emma."
"She was never going to see that, Maria," Arthur said. He stood up from his chair, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the dining room. He walked over to where Maria stood, gently placing a hand on her trembling shoulder.
Then, he looked directly at Victoria.
"What he said next was so unexpected, so perfectly timed, that Maria nearly burst out laughing, the stepmother froze in disbelief, and Emma’s eyes widened with excitement..."
"Since you are so deeply concerned about efficiency, competence, and the proper management of this estate, Victoria," Arthur declared, his voice ringing clearly through the silent house, "I am relieving you of all household management duties immediately. From this moment on, Maria is no longer our maid. She is the Executive House Director of the Sterling Estate. Her salary will be tripled, she will have full authority over all staff hiring and firing, and all household expenses must be approved by her before they reach my desk."
Victoria’s jaw dropped. She stood up so fast her chair scraped violently against the hardwood floor. "Are you insane?! You are elevating a servant over me? I am your wife!"
"And Maria is the woman who actually keeps my daughter safe and happy while you spend your days at charity luncheons spending my money," Arthur replied coldly. "If you cannot respect the people who make this house a home, Victoria, then you have no right to run it."
Emma let out a tiny, triumphant gasp, her eyes shining like stars. Victoria looked as if she had just been slapped in front of a stadium of people. Her face transitioned from pale white to a furious, blotchy red.

"You will regret this, Arthur," Victoria hissed, her voice shaking with humiliation. "You cannot humiliate me in my own home."
She turned on her heel and swept out of the dining room, the heavy double doors slamming shut behind her.
