Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Execution

Monday morning broke over Newport Beach with clear, blinding sunshine. The boardroom on the 40th floor of the Vale Harbor Systems tower was a masterpiece of chrome and glass, overlooking the sprawling city below.
The twelve members of the board of directors sat around a massive mahogany table, their faces tense. At the head of the table sat Derek Ward, looking smug and victorious in a tailored charcoal suit. Vanessa sat in the gallery of chairs along the wall, wearing a stunning white dress, looking every bit the supportive, elegant billionaire's fiancée.
When Ethan walked into the room, a hush fell over the crowd. But he wasn't alone.
Behind him walked Nora, wearing a sophisticated, tailored navy blue dress, her hair pinned up elegantly, her posture tall and proud. Beside her was Lily, wearing a bright yellow dress and her scuffed sneakers, which she had refused to trade for new shoes because they were her "detective shoes."
Derek laughed out loud, leaning back in his chair. "Ethan, what is this? This is a closed board session for a multi-billion-dollar launch. Why have you brought your cleaning staff and a child into the room?"
Vanessa smirked from the back, eyeing Nora with cold amusement. "Ethan, darling, are you having some sort of breakdown? If you're stressed about the Lattice launch, this isn't the way to handle it."
Ethan didn't answer. He walked to the head of the table opposite Derek, plugged his laptop into the main presentation hub, and looked at the board members.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Ethan began, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Today was supposed to be the launch of Lattice. But before we discuss the software, we need to address a critical security breach that occurred inside my own home last week."
Derek’s eyes flicked to Vanessa, a micro-expression of sudden anxiety crossing his face. Vanessa’s smirk froze.
"As you know," Ethan continued, "Lattice is designed to detect threats before they happen. But sometimes, the best security system isn't an AI. Sometimes, it’s a very smart seven-year-old girl who notices things adults miss."
Ethan tapped a key on his laptop. The massive projector screen behind him flickered to life.
Instead of software architecture, it showed a high-definition video of the abstract painting in Ethan's office. The camera zoomed in, showing the hidden matchbox transmitter.
"Last Friday, Lily Parker discovered this illegal audio and data transmission bug hidden in my private office," Ethan announced.
A collective gasp went up from the board members.
"Ethan, this is absurd," Derek spat, standing up. "A bug? You're paranoid. You're trying to delay the launch because your software isn't ready!"
"Oh, it's ready, Derek," Ethan said softly. "In fact, it worked perfectly to track the person who stole the decoy data from my desk on Friday night."
Ethan tapped another key. The screen changed to show the internal security footage from Friday night. The boardroom went dead silent as the video clearly showed Vanessa Crane slipping into the office, cracking the desk drawer, and downloading the files onto her tablet.
Vanessa stood up, her face turning a ghastly shade of white. "Ethan... this is a misunderstanding... I was just looking for a pen... I—"
"And here," Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping like an iron gavel, "is the data packet she downloaded. It contained a tracking Trojan. Let’s see where that stolen data went."

The screen displayed the real-time tracking map, showing the data routing directly into Derek Ward’s personal home server, followed by a stream of decrypted text messages between Derek and Vanessa plotting the entire hostile takeover, the theft of Lattice, and the destruction of Ethan's reputation.
The evidence was overwhelming, definitive, and catastrophic.
