Chapter 5 - The Caught Shadow

The air in the office grew suffocatingly tight. Vanessa stared at Lily, her beautiful face contorting from momentary shock into an expression of cold, venomous calculation.
"What are you doing here?" Vanessa hissed, stepping over the spilled pens. Her voice had lost every drop of its usual sweet, melodic charm. It sounded sharp, dangerous.
Lily didn't run. She stood her ground, her small hands clenched into fists at her sides, though her chin trembled slightly. "You shouldn't be in here. Mr. Ethan said this room is private."
Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh, taking a slow step toward the child. "Mr. Ethan belongs to me, you little brat. Everything in this house belongs to me. Where is your mother?"
"Cleaning upstairs," Lily said, her voice small but steady.
Vanessa glanced out the office door, checking the hallway, then looked down at the digital watch on Lily's wrist, which was still glowing blue from the signal she had sent to Ethan. Vanessa’s eyes narrowed as she realized the child wasn't just wandering around; she was watching her.
"What is that on your wrist?" Vanessa demanded, reaching out to grab Lily's arm. "What are you playing with?"
"Leave her alone!"
Nora’s voice shattered the tension like a gunshot.
Nora stood at the end of the hallway, a heavy industrial mop in her hands, her face pale but her eyes blazing with the ferocious protective instinct of a mother. She dropped the mop and ran down the corridor, pulling Lily behind her back, shielding her completely from Vanessa.
"Miss Crane," Nora said, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her voice shaking but resolute. "Please step back from my daughter."
Vanessa straightened up, smoothing her designer coat, her demeanor instantly shifting back to that of an aristocratic ruler dealing with a peasant. "Nora. Thank goodness. Your daughter was snooping through Mr. Vale's private papers. I caught her trying to steal things from his desk."
"That’s a lie!" Lily cried out from behind her mother’s waist. "She was putting a black stick in the computer! She’s the one stealing!"
Nora looked from Vanessa's tight, furious expression to the open desk drawer. She remembered Lily's questions about the hidden camera from days before. Suddenly, the pieces clicked together in Nora’s mind.
"I think you should leave, Miss Crane," Nora said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady tone. "Before I call the police."
"The police?" Vanessa laughed, a sound dripping with condescension. "Who do you think they'll believe? A billionaire's fiancée or a cleaning lady whose daughter has a history of wandering into rooms she doesn't belong in? If you say one word about this to Ethan, I will ensure you are fired tonight, blacklisted from every estate in Orange County, and arrested for attempted theft. Do you understand me, Nora? You will be living on the street with your little detective."
Nora’s shoulders trembled, the weight of a lifetime of poverty and vulnerability crashing down on her. Vanessa saw the fear in Nora's eyes and smiled, a cruel, victorious smirk.
"That's what I thought," Vanessa said, slinging her purse over her shoulder. "Now, out of my way."
She brushed past Nora and Lily, her perfume leaving a toxic trail in the air as she marched down the grand staircase and out into the foggy night.
Nora sank to her knees on the hardwood floor, burying her face in her hands. Lily immediately threw her arms around her mother’s neck.
"I'm sorry, Mom. I'm sorry," Lily cried.

"It's okay, baby," Nora whispered, holding her tightly. "It's okay. We'll pack our things. We have to leave."
"No, you don't," a voice spoke from the darkness of the hallway.
