Chapter 6 - Turning the Tide

Nora gasped, looking up to see Ethan Vale standing at the entrance of the office. His jacket was gone, his tie loosened, and his eyes were filled with a mixture of intense anger and profound gratitude. He had entered through the garage, having sped back the moment he saw Vanessa confront Lily.

"Mr. Vale," Nora said, instantly standing up and pulling Lily back, her posture defensive. "I swear, Lily didn't steal anything. She was just—"

"I know exactly what she was doing, Nora," Ethan interrupted gently, stepping into the room. He knelt down in front of Lily, just as he had done days before. "She was saving my life. Again."

He looked up at Nora, his expression deeply sincere. "I heard everything Vanessa said to you. I have hidden security cameras in this room. Vanessa didn't know about them, but I saw how she threatened you. I saw how she treated Lily. I am so deeply sorry that my blindness brought that dangerous woman near your family."

Nora blinked back tears, her confusion giving way to a sudden, overwhelming sense of relief. "You... you know what she’s doing?"

"She and Derek Ward have been trying to steal Lattice," Ethan explained, standing up and walking over to his computer. "They planted a camera behind that painting. Lily found it. Tonight, Vanessa thought she downloaded my company's core algorithm. But thanks to Lily’s warning, I was able to prepare a trap."

He turned the monitor toward Nora and Lily. On the screen, a real-time geographic map was tracking Vanessa’s tablet. A red dot was moving swiftly down the Pacific Coast Highway, heading straight toward Derek Ward's estate.

"She’s delivering the stolen data to Derek right now," Ethan said, a cold, sharp smile cutting across his face. "They think they've won. They think Monday morning they're going to walk into the board meeting and strip me of my company."

"What are you going to do?" Nora asked, her hand resting protectively on Lily's shoulder.

"I'm going to let them try," Ethan said, his voice brimming with steel. "And then I’m going to destroy them. But I can't do it alone. Nora, I need you and Lily to trust me. The next forty-eight hours are going to be chaotic. Vanessa will try to use her power to discredit anyone who stands in her way. I want you and Lily to stay here, at the mansion. I have a full security detail coming from my company—people I trust with my life. They will keep you safe while I prepare the counter-strike."

Nora looked around the vast, luxurious mansion that had always felt like a beautiful prison she was only allowed to clean. She looked down at Lily, who was nodding vigorously.

"We'll stay, Mr. Ethan," Lily said bravely. "We have to finish the puzzle."

Ethan smiled, a genuine, warm smile that lifted the shadows from his face. "Yes, we do, Lily. Let’s finish it."
