Chapter 7 - The Master Key

The weekend was a blur of high-tech preparation. Ethan’s mansion, usually so quiet, became a war room. Five top-tier cybersecurity analysts from Vale Harbor Systems’ elite internal security division arrived under the cover of night, setting up temporary workstations in the dining room.

Nora, despite Ethan’s protests that she should rest, insisted on keeping the team fed, brewing pots of strong coffee and preparing meals. For the first time, she wasn't just a ghost cleaning up after the rich; she was an essential part of the team keeping the operation running.

Lily sat next to Ethan at the main control desk, fascinated by the cascading lines of code. Ethan took the time to explain what each screen meant, treating the seven-year-old not as a distraction, but as his luckiest charm.

"See this, Lily?" Ethan pointed to a blue encrypted thread on his screen. "This is Vanessa’s real identity. Her real name isn't Vanessa Crane. Her legal name is Vanessa Vance. Six years ago, she was involved in a corporate espionage scandal in Europe, but she managed to scrub her record. Derek hired her specifically to target me."

"She’s a fake princess," Lily remarked, biting into an apple.

"Exactly," Ethan laughed. "A fake princess. And she’s about to lose her castle."

By Sunday night, the trap was fully set. The Trojan horse Vanessa had downloaded had successfully mapped out Derek Ward’s entire digital infrastructure. Ethan now had records of every email, every offshore bank account transfer, and every conversation detailing how they planned to fake a leak to ruin Ethan's reputation and force a hostile takeover of Vale Harbor Systems.

At midnight, Ethan received a text message from Vanessa: “Thinking of you, darling! Can’t wait for the big launch tomorrow. See you in the boardroom at 9:00 AM. I love you.”

Ethan stared at the message, feeling no pain, no heartbreak—only a profound sense of clarity. He replied with a single sentence: “See you tomorrow, Vanessa. It’s going to be an unforgettable day.”

Turning to Nora and Lily, who were watching him from the doorway, Ethan sighed. "Tomorrow morning, the board meets. I want you both there."

Nora hesitated. "Mr. Vale... a boardroom? We don't belong in a place like that. I don't even have the right clothes."

Ethan walked over to her, his expression deeply earnest. "Nora, you and Lily are the only reasons I still have a company to walk into tomorrow. You aren't just coming as guests. You're coming as the heroes of this story. I’ve already arranged for a car to pick you up, and a personal shopper friend of mine dropped off some things for you both upstairs. Please. I want you by my side when the truth comes out."

Nora looked at Lily, whose eyes were shining with excitement. Nora smiled softly, her pride melting into a deep sense of validation. "All right, Ethan. We'll be there."
