Chapter 3 - The Traitor’s Waltz

The next morning, the mansion smelled of expensive jasmine and fresh rain. Vanessa arrived unannounced, her white designer trench coat draped elegantly over her shoulders, her laughter echoing through the high ceilings.

"Ethan, darling!" she called out, stepping into his office and planting a soft, perfumed kiss on his cheek. "You look exhausted. You're obsessing over this launch again."

Ethan forced his muscles to relax, molding his face into the expression of a stressed, adoring fiancé. "It's the final stretch, Vanessa. Lattice is my life's work. If the board presentation on Monday goes perfectly, we're set for life. Everything changes."

From the corner of his eye, Ethan noticed Vanessa’s gaze flick subtly, almost imperceptibly, toward the abstract painting on the wall. A chill ran down his spine.

"It's just a software program, Ethan," she said smoothly, walking over to the walnut console beneath the painting, pretending to adjust a vase of calla lilies. "Surely you can take a break tonight. Derek called. He wants to host a pre-launch dinner for us at the Yacht Club. Just a small, intimate celebration before the madness begins."

"Derek did?" Ethan asked, sitting at his desk and deliberately opening a heavily encrypted file on his monitor—a file he had spent the previous night fabricating. It looked exactly like the master source code for Lattice, but buried deep within its digital DNA was a tracking Trojan horse—a "canary in a coal mine" that would alert Ethan the exact second it was copied or opened on an unauthorized device.

"Yes," Vanessa said, leaning over his shoulder, her breath warm against his neck. Her eyes were locked onto the glowing monitor. "He thinks we deserve to toast to the future. What are you working on right now?"

"The core encryption keys," Ethan lied effortlessly, tapping a few keys. "I'm storing the final master key on a localized flash drive right here in my desk drawer. I won't upload it to the main server until Monday morning at 8:00 AM. If anyone got hold of this specific sequence before then, they could bypass the entire AI firewall."

" Fascinating," Vanessa murmured. Her hand rested on his shoulder, but her fingers were tense. "You really think of everything, don't you?"

"I try," Ethan said, looking up at her with a smile that felt like swallowing glass.

Later that afternoon, Nora and Lily arrived for their scheduled cleaning. Ethan watched them from his balcony. Nora looked tired, the dark circles under her eyes telling the story of a mother working herself to the bone to provide for her daughter. Lily walked beside her, carrying her little backpack, her eyes scanning the ground, always observing.

Ethan realized with a jolt of clarity that the only person in his life he could truly trust right now was a seven-year-old girl who had no motive other than honesty.

While Nora was busy cleaning the master suite upstairs, Ethan found Lily sitting at the breakfast nook, neatly organizing her colored pencils by shade.

"Hey, detective," Ethan said softly, sitting across from her.

Lily looked up, her gray eyes serious. "Did you find the bad thing?"

"I did," Ethan said. He slid a small, silver wrapped chocolate bar across the table—the good kind, not the ones Derek brought. "And you were right. It didn't belong to me. But I need your help with a very important mission. Do you think your mom would mind if I asked you to watch something for me?"

Lily took the chocolate but didn't open it yet. "Mom says we shouldn't get in the way of your business."

"This isn't business, Lily. This is protection," Ethan said gently. He handed her a small, ordinary-looking digital watch. "This watch has a special button on the side. If you ever see anyone go into my office when I'm not home, and they start touching the painting or my desk drawers, I want you to press this button twice. Can you do that?"

Lily took the watch, her small fingers tracing the digital screen. "Like a secret signal?"

"Exactly like a secret signal."
