Chapter 6 - The Turncoat and the Ticker

The failed raid on the Lake Forest estate sent shockwaves through both the criminal underworld and the federal authorities. The next morning, FBI Agent Sarah Vance stood in the middle of the scorched basement hallway, her boots crunching on the charred debris.

Marco Leone stood beside her, his lawyers flanking him like a shield of expensive paper.

"You had a small war inside your house, Leone," Vance said, her eyes scanning the blast patterns. "And yet, my team found four bodies belonging to the Valenti family, but not a single one of your people. Where is the waitress?"

"I have no knowledge of any waitress, Agent Vance," Marco said smoothly, his hands tucked into his pockets. "As you can see, my home was attacked by terrorists. My security team acted within the laws of self-defense. If you want to talk about crimes, I suggest you ask Vittorio Valenti why his men are using military-grade thermite in residential neighborhoods."

Vance walked up to him, her face inches from his jaw. "The waitress is the key, Marco. If she talks to me, I can put Vittorio away for life. If she stays with you, she’s just another body waiting to happen."

"She’s safer with me than she is in your federal protective custody, Vance," Marco murmured, so low the lawyers couldn't hear. "Your own department has a mole. That’s how Valenti found this house."

Vance’s eyes widened, but before she could answer, Marco turned and walked away.

He returned to the hidden wing of the house where Clara was being treated for smoke inhalation. She was sitting up, a wet cloth over her forehead, while Mia slept soundly beside her.

"You're an extraordinary woman, Clara," Marco said, standing at the foot of her bed. "Most people freeze when they smell smoke. You built a bomb."

"I’m a nurse, Marco. We’re trained to solve problems under pressure," Clara said, a weak smile touching her lips. "But we can't stay here. They know about this place. Next time, they'll bring more men."

"They won't have a next time," Marco said, his voice dropping into a dark, calculated register. "Santino found the mole. It was Detective Miller from the 1st Precinct. He was the one who gave Valenti our coordinates."

Clara shuddered. "The man who is supposed to be investigating my case?"

"Yes," Marco said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small flash drive. "But Miller was sloppy. We intercepted his offshore bank transfers from the Valenti shell corporation. I’m not giving this to the police, Clara. I’m giving this to the press."

An hour later, every major news station in Illinois received an anonymous digital drop. By noon, the tickers at the bottom of the screens read: CHIEF DETECTIVE CHARGED WITH CORRUPTION IN CAFÉ MILANO SHOOTING. WAITRESS EXONERATED.

The public narrative shifted overnight. Clara was no longer a criminal accomplice; she was the innocent heroine who had been framed by a corrupt system to protect a mafia hit squad. The city began to demand justice for the "Angel of Milano."

But as Clara watched the news, she knew the danger wasn't over. A cornered animal is the most dangerous kind, and Vittorio Valenti was running out of options.
