Chapter 5 - The Battle for Lake Forest

The storm raged outside, pounding the stained-glass windows of the grand entrance as Marco and Clara slipped through the side entrance of the estate's conservatory. The air inside smelled of ozone, gunsmoke, and damp earth.
Marco moved like a phantom through the shadows, every inch of his former life as a criminal kingpin coming back to him with terrifying precision. But this time, he wasn't fighting for territory or pride. He was fighting for his family.
In the lower parlor, a mercenary was patrolling near the central breaker box, trying to ensure the primary power stayed off. Marco emerged from the darkness behind him without a sound. Before the man could turn, Marco slammed his head into the exposed brick wall, disarming him mid-fall and catching the fallen rifle before it hit the floor.
Clara kept close behind Marco, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her mind was crystal clear. She guided him through a narrow service hallway behind the kitchen—a passage built in the 1920s that bypassed the main staircase entirely.
"This leads directly into the nursery corridor behind the linen closet," Clara whispered in his ear, her hand resting on his shoulder.
"Good girl," Marco murmured, pressing his back against the secret door panel.
Above them, in the main hallway, Valenti was advancing on the nursery door where Old Gianni lay wounded. Gianni was clutching his shoulder, his pistol raised with a trembling hand, standing between the mercenary and the room where the children were hidden.
"Out of the way, old man," Valenti scoffed, raising his rifle. "You're too old for this war."
"I might be old," Gianni growled, spit and blood flecking his lips, "but I belong to Marco Leone."
Before Valenti could pull the trigger, the wooden paneling of the linen closet behind him exploded outward.
Marco stepped through the dust and splinters, firing three rapid rounds from his handgun. The shots struck Valenti in the chest plate. The mercenary stumbled back, but his heavy body armor absorbed the kinetic force. He spun around, raising his assault rifle toward Marco.
Clara stepped out from the closet right behind Marco. Remembering the lessons Marco had insisted on teaching her at the firing range six months ago, she brought her pistol up with both hands, aimed for the unarmored gap at the mercenary’s throat, and pulled the trigger.
The shot cracked through the hallway. Valenti froze, his rifle dropping from his hands as he fell backward onto the carpet, motionless.
Silence descended upon the second floor, broken only by the sound of heavy rain against the roof and the labored breathing of the wounded Gianni.
"Marco! Clara!" Lily’s terrified voice cried out from inside the nursery.
Marco threw the nursery door open. Within a second, Mia burst out from under the blanket, throwing her small arms around Clara’s waist. Clara sank to her knees on the floor, pulling the little girl tightly into her arms, burying her face in Mia’s dark curls as tears finally spilled down her cheeks.
"I kept it safe, Clara! I kept the red crayon safe!" Mia sobbed into her neck.
"I know, baby. I know," Clara choked out, kissing the top of Mia’s head again and again. "You were so brave."
Marco knelt beside them, wrapping his giant arms around both of them, resting his forehead against Clara’s. For a long moment, the three of them stood frozen in the embrace, an unbreakable sanctuary amidst the ruined hallway.
Santino rushed up the stairs a moment later, tactical vest covered in rainwater, holding a black box with blinking red lights. "I found the signal jammer in the south gazebo, boss. Smashed it to pieces. Vance is outside with three squads of local tactical police."
Marco slowly stood up, looking at Santino, then down at the fallen mercenaries. The storm outside was beginning to clear, light blue morning light breaking through the eastern clouds over Lake Michigan.
"Is the estate secure?" Marco asked.
"Every single one of Rossi's men is either in cuffs or dead, boss," Santino replied, breathing a heavy sigh of relief. "It’s over."
Agent Vance walked up the stairs, taking in the scene—the secret passage, the wounded guard being tended to by Lily, and Clara holding Mia. Vance looked at Marco, then slowly lowered her weapon, placing it back into her holster.

"The Department of Justice is going to have a million questions about this tonight, Leone," Vance said quietly, though there was a look of deep respect in her eyes. "But given the evidence on Rossi’s ship and the mercenaries on your property... this was clear-cut self-defense. You protected your family."
"No," Marco said, looking down at Clara, who was standing up while holding Mia in her arms. "We protected each other."
