Chapter 3 - The Queen of Ashes

The interior of The Iron Lily was an opulent display of brushed marble, polished teakwood, and priceless modern art. Standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass doors of the main salon was a woman in her late thirties, wearing a tailored white pantsuit. Her obsidian hair was pulled back into a sleek, razor-sharp ponytail, and her cold green eyes fixed immediately on Marco as he walked into the room, flanked by Clara and Vance.

"Marco," Donatella Rossi said, her voice dripping with ice and a faint Italian accent. She held a glass of crystal cognac in her hand. "You've grown soft. You bring federal agents and... a waitress to settle business?"

"I bring my wife, Donatella," Marco said calmly, stepping forward so that he positioned himself slightly in front of Clara. "And I bring the law. Times have changed. The Leone family doesn't hide in dark alleyways anymore."

Donatella let out a bitter, melodramatic laugh, taking a slow sip of her drink. "The Leone family? You destroyed the Leone family! You threw away four generations of power and respect so you could pay taxes and play happy family in Lake Forest! Your father is rolling in his grave, Marco."

"My father died because he believed fear was the only way to rule," Marco replied coldly. "I learned better. You took my freight container. You killed two of your own men to frame my company. Why?"

Donatella’s green eyes flashed with venom. She set her glass down with a sharp clack on a marble table. "Because you ruined my life! When you pulled out of Europe, you left my family exposed to the Russians and the Corsicans. My brother was killed in Marseilles six months ago because your logistics network wasn't there to back us up!"

Clara stepped out from behind Marco, her voice steady and echoing clearly through the salon. "Marco didn't kill your brother, Donatella. Your family’s refusal to walk away from illicit blood money killed him. You're blaming Marco because it's easier than looking in the mirror and admitting that your empire burned because of your own greed."

Donatella glared at Clara, her lip curling in disgust. "Look at you. The heroic little hero of Chicago. Do you really think you changed him, girl? Do you think a coat of expensive paint makes him a saint? He has blood on his hands that will never wash out."

"I know exactly who my husband was," Clara said, taking another step forward, refusing to back down. "And I know who he is today. He’s a man who builds, while you're just a ghost trying to burn down everyone else’s house because yours caught fire."

Donatella’s face twitched with rage. She reached into her jacket, but before she could draw a weapon, Agent Vance’s sidearm was out, aimed squarely at Donatella’s chest.

"Don't do it, Rossi," Vance commanded, her voice like iron. "This ship might be in international waters, but you are currently threatening a federal officer and U.S. citizens. Raise that gun and you won't survive to see trial."

Donatella slowly pulled her hand back, empty, showing her palms with a twisted smile. "You think you've won? You think this was about framing a logistics company?"

Marco’s eyes narrowed instantly. "What did you do, Donatella?"

Donatella clicked a small remote on the table. A large wall display flickered to life, showing a live camera feed from inside the main security vault of the Lake Forest estate—where Mia, Lily, and her children were currently under guard.

Clara felt her blood run cold. She took a sharp breath, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Did you really think I came to Lake Michigan just to hijack a train?" Donatella sneered, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. "While you were playing corporate diplomacy out here on the water, my best strike team was infiltrating your home. The satellite jammers weren't stolen from the train, Marco. They were deployed inside your estate's perimeter thirty minutes ago. Your house is entirely cut off from the world. No phones, no security alarms, no police."

Marco was across the room in a flash, his hand clamping around Donatella’s throat before Vance could even react, slamming the woman against the glass wall. The structural glass creaked under the force.

"If you lay a finger on my daughter," Marco hissed, his voice a nightmare from the deepest depths of his past, his eyes black with rage, "I will rip your empire apart piece by piece, starting with you."

Donatella choked out a laugh, struggling for air under his iron grip. "It’s... already... started, Marco. You wanted a clean life? You're going to lose everything."
