Chapter 4 - Siege at Lake Forest

"Marco, stop!" Clara shouted, grabbing his arm. "If you kill her now, we lose any chance of knowing their exact entry plan! She wants you to break!"

Marco’s muscles trembled with lethal intent, but Clara’s voice anchored him. He let go of Donatella, who slumped to the floor, gasping for air and coughing violently.

"Vance, secure her," Marco commanded without looking back. He turned to Clara, his eyes burning with intense urgency. "We're going back. Now."

"The communications are jammed," Vance said, snapping zip-ties onto Donatella’s wrists. "I can't even call my field office or local police from here. That military jammer creates a two-mile blackout bubble."

"Then we don't call," Clara said, her voice deadly quiet, all fear replaced by a cold, protective rage. "We go."

They sprinted down the yacht’s gangway back to the executive launch. Santino was waiting at the helm, his face instantly souring as he saw their expressions. "What happened?"

"The estate is under attack," Marco said, stepping into the cabin. "Donatella’s team bypassed the perimeter using a signal jammer. Mia is inside."

Santino didn't ask another question. He slammed the throttles forward, and the twin high-performance engines roared to life, throwing a massive rooster-tail of spray as the boat shot across the dark, churning waters of Lake Michigan toward the shoreline.

Meanwhile, at the Lake Forest mansion, the storm had fully arrived. Heavy rain battered the glass conservatory where the wedding reception had taken place hours before.

Inside the primary estate house, the lights flickered and died, plunging the vast halls into darkness. Emergency backup generators clicked on three seconds later, bathing the corridors in a dim, amber glow.

In the second-floor nursery, six-year-old Mia sat on the edge of her bed, holding her favorite stuffed bear tightly. Beside her, Clara’s sister Lily was trying frantically to get a dial tone on her cell phone.

"Nothing," Lily whispered, her hands shaking. "No service. No Wi-Fi. The landlines are dead too."

Standing near the heavy oak door of the nursery was Old Gianni, a veteran Outfit soldier who had transitioned into the head of domestic security for the estate. He had his jacket unbuttoned, his hand resting on the grip of a suppressed pistol.

"Stay behind the reinforced door, Mrs. Lily," Gianni said in a low, steady voice. "The safe room in the basement is fully stocked, but we have to cross the main hallway to reach the elevator. I need to clear the stairs first."

Suddenly, a quiet thud echoed from down the hall, followed by the muffled shatter of glass from the ground floor.

Gianni raised his weapon, his eyes locked on the hallway. "They're inside."

Four men dressed in unmarked black tactical gear moved silently through the grand foyer, their weapons fitted with thermal scopes. Their leader, a scarred mercenary named Valenti, motioned for two men to secure the ground floor while he and the fourth man headed up the sweeping marble staircase.

"Target is the girl," Valenti whispered over his short-range comms—the only radio frequency working within the jamming field. "Capture alive if possible. The boss wants lever against Leone. Anyone else in the house is collateral."

Upstairs, Gianni waited around the corner of the master corridor. As the first mercenary rounded the stairs, Gianni fired two quick shots. The mercenary dropped, but Valenti immediately ducked behind a marble pillar, returning automatic fire. The suppressed rounds chewed through the antique wood paneling of the walls.

Gianni took a round to his left shoulder, grunting in pain as he fell back against the nursery door.

Inside, Mia heard the heavy impact against the door and squeezed her eyes shut. She reached into her pocket, her tiny fingers wrapping around the resin-encased red crayon Clara had given back to her.

"Don't worry, Mia," Lily whispered, wrapping her arms around her own children and Mia, pulling them into the corner of the room. "Clara and Marco will be here. They always come back."

Outside the estate grounds, the executive launch slammed into the private dock at fifty knots. Marco, Clara, Santino, and Vance jumped onto the wooden pier before the boat had even finished coasting.

"Santino, take the north entrance through the gardens," Marco ordered as they sprinted up the winding stone steps toward the mansion. "Vance, clear the basement access. Clara—"

"I'm coming with you to the main house," Clara interrupted, not slowing her stride for a second. Her high heels had already been kicked off on the boat; she was running barefoot across the wet lawn, her eyes fierce. "I know every hidden passage and servant door in that building. You need me to navigate the dark."

Marco looked at her for a fraction of a second, seeing the absolute determination in her face. He pulled a compact 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster and handed it to her.

"Keep the safety on until you need it," Marco said. "Shoot to protect."

Clara took the heavy steel weapon without hesitation. "Let's get our daughter."
