Chapter 2 - The Fortress of the Outfit

The smell of antiseptic was the first thing that brought Clara back to consciousness. For a wild, disorienting second, she thought she was in the simulation lab at the university. Then she realized the ceiling was made of heavy, exposed oak beams, and the light filtering through the high windows came from a forest, not a city street.

She tried to sit up, but a sharp spike of pain locked her spine.

"Don't move, signorina," a gentle, older voice said. "The bullet shattered your clavicle and nicked the subscapular artery. If I hadn't stitched it within twenty minutes, you would be a memory."

Clara turned her head. An elderly man in a pristine white doctor's coat was adjusting an IV drip hooked to her right arm. The room was massive, decorated with antique European furniture, but equipped with medical gear that rivaled a private hospital wing.

"Where am I?" Clara asked, her voice cracking.

"You are at the Leone estate in Lake Forest," the door opened, and Marco Leone walked in. He had changed out of his charcoal suit into a dark cashmere sweater, but the aura of absolute authority remained unchanged. He dismissed the doctor with a slight nod.

Clara pulled the heavy silk duvet up to her chin, her eyes wide with terror. "I know who you are. I see the papers. You're... you're Marco Leone. The police are looking for me."

"The police are looking for a body, Clara," Marco said, walking to the edge of the bed. He held out a tablet. The screen displayed a news report showing her apartment in Logan Square surrounded by yellow crime tape.

"Sources say Clara Higgins, 24, had unexplained large deposits in her bank account prior to the shooting at Café Milano," the anchorperson said. "Detectives are investigating her potential ties to the Valenti crime syndicate."

Clara’s breath hitched. "That's a lie! Those deposits are my student loans! My financial aid just cleared last week!"

"I know," Marco said softly, sitting on the leather chair beside her. "The Valentis control the commander of the 1st Precinct. They are framing you to ensure that if you ever wake up in a public hospital, your testimony against their shooters will be dismissed as a criminal dispute. They want you dead, Clara. Legally or physically."

"Why?" Clara sobbed, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "I just wanted to save a little girl. I didn't know who she was."

"Because saving my daughter makes you the enemy of my enemies," Marco said, his gray eyes hardening into flint. "The man who ordered the hit is Vittorio Valenti. He believes that by killing Mia, he can break my control over the shipping ports. You took that victory away from him."

The door creaked open, and a small figure slipped into the room. Mia was wearing clean yellow pajamas, her dark curls brushed neatly. She was holding the broken halves of her red crayon, taped back together with clear packing tape.

She walked straight to Clara’s bedside, ignoring her father’s warning look, and placed the taped crayon on Clara’s uninjured hand.

"You saved my crayon," Mia whispered, her large brown eyes shining with absolute trust. "And you saved me. Daddy said you're my guardian angel now."

Clara looked at the child, then at the taped crayon, and something inside her fractured heart mended. She squeezed the little girl's fingers. "I'll always keep it safe, Mia."

Marco watched the interaction, his expression softening in a way that would have shocked his caporegimes. He looked back at Clara. "You saved my world, Clara Higgins. Now, whether you like it or not, my world is going to protect you."
