Chapter 9 - The Healing Garden

Two years passed in a golden blur of purpose, warmth, and genuine happiness.
The Cross Estate had changed completely. The cold, rigid atmosphere of the past was gone, replaced by the sounds of children playing, staff laughing, and frequent family gatherings on the grand lawn.
Carol had excelled in her role as Estate Administrator and Director of the Foundation, earning the deep respect of every business leader in the state. And over those two years, a quiet, gentle connection had bloomed naturally between us—built not on grand social performances, but on deep mutual respect, shared values, and unspoken affection.
One summer evening, as the sun dipped beneath the horizon, painting the sky in shades of crimson and violet, I walked through the rose gardens with Carol.
Ivy was ahead of us, chasing fireflies with a small plastic net, her giggles echoing through the peaceful night air.
"It's hard to believe how much our lives have changed, Nathaniel," Carol said softly, wrapping a light cardigan around her shoulders.
"It changed for the better the day Ivy tugged on my sleeve," I answered, stopping near the marble fountain and taking Carol’s hands in mine.
Carol looked up into my eyes, her cheeks flushing with a soft, beautiful blush. "You gave us a life we never dreamed we could have."
"You gave this house a soul, Carol," I whispered, reaching into my jacket pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.
Carol gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as I dropped down onto one knee beneath the starlit sky.
"Carol Bennett," I said, my voice filled with pure, unshakeable devotion. "You are the strongest, kindest, and most magnificent woman I have ever known. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the love of my life?"
Tears of pure happiness welled up in Carol's eyes as she nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes, Nathaniel! A thousand times yes!"

From across the lawn, little Ivy came running toward us, throwing her tiny arms around both of our legs. "Yay! Uncle Nate is gonna be my daddy!"
I lifted Ivy into my arms, pulling Carol close into a warm, unbreakable embrace as the stars shone brightly overhead.
