Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Empire

Over the next three weeks, the downfall of Vanessa Hale and her mother, Eleanor, became the biggest scandal in the country.
Once Nathaniel pulled his financial backing and released the unedited security footage to the district attorney, Vanessa’s carefully constructed life imploded.
Investigations into Vanessa’s past revealed that her "charity work" was nothing more than a massive embezzlement scheme. She had been diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars from children's cancer funds into private offshore accounts to pay off her mother’s gambling debts.
I sat in my corporate office on the top floor of the Cross Tower, reviewing the legal reports with Paige Vance, my head corporate attorney.
"Vanessa’s bail request was denied this morning, Nate," Paige reported, sliding a folder across the desk. "The district attorney is charging her with grand larceny, charitable fraud, and felony assault. She's facing up to twelve years in state prison."
"And her mother?" I asked, sipping my dark coffee.
"Eleanor Hale was named as a co-conspirator in the embezzlement charges," Paige smiled grimly. "Their assets have been completely frozen. They are officially bankrupt."
A quiet knock sounded on my office door.
Carol walked inside, wearing a professional navy blue suit. She looked healthier, happier, and her confidence had bloomed tremendously over the past month. Little Ivy walked beside her, holding a brand-new coloring book and a box of crayons.
"Mr. Cross," Carol said softly, holding a stack of event reports. "The quarterly budget for the estate's staff health initiative is ready for your signature."
"Carol, please, call me Nathaniel," I smiled, standing up from my desk.
Ivy ran over to my chair, holding up a fresh drawing of a giant yellow sun and a big house. "Look, Uncle Nate! I drew our house!"

I dropped to one knee, looking at the drawing with genuine joy. "It's the most beautiful drawing I've ever seen, Ivy. We're going to put this right on my main desk."
Carol looked at me with tears of quiet gratitude in her eyes. For the first time in years, the Cross Estate felt like a real home—a place filled with safety, respect, and genuine love.
