Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

Eleanor Hale stood up from the sofa, her champagne glass rattling against her manicured fingernails. "Nathaniel! What is the meaning of this dramatic entrance? It is ten minutes before the wedding! Your guests are waiting!"
"The wedding is off," Nathaniel stated plainly.
Vanessa let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh. "Nate... darling, what are you talking about? Is this some kind of joke? Are you having cold feet?"
"Marcus," Nathaniel commanded, not taking his eyes off Vanessa. "Show her."
Marcus held the tablet up in front of Vanessa’s face and hit play.
The audio filled the quiet dressing suite. Vanessa’s own venomous voice echoed off the mirrored walls: "If I see a single drop of water on my silk train, you pathetic little worm, I will make sure your daughter is put into foster care by sunset!"
Vanessa’s face drained of every single drop of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The pristine mask she had worn for two long years shattered into a million unrecoverable pieces right before her mother’s eyes.
"That... that video is a fake!" Eleanor shrieked, stepping between Nathaniel and her daughter. "It's an AI manipulation! Someone is trying to sabotage my daughter's wedding!"
"It came directly from my estate's secure, encrypted internal server, Eleanor," Nathaniel barked, stepping forward until he was towering over both women. "You struck a defenseless woman who has worked for my family with devotion for four years. You threatened a three-year-old child."
Vanessa’s innocent posture vanished entirely. Seeing that her lie was completely useless, her eyes hardened into pure, ugly malice.
"So what?!" Vanessa spat, crossing her arms over her expensive gown, her voice dripping with toxic disdain. "She's a servant, Nathaniel! She was careless with my dress! I'm about to become the mistress of this estate! I am allowed to discipline the staff!"
"Not on my property," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a deadly, low rumble. "And never, ever in my life."
Nathaniel turned to Carol, his expression instantly softening with profound respect and sorrow. He walked over to the weeping housekeeper, placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, and looked at little Ivy.
"Carol," Nathaniel said loudly enough for everyone in the room to hear. "I am deeply, deeply sorry for what this monster did to you under my roof."
"Mr. Cross..." Carol sobbed, holding Ivy close. "I was so scared she would take Ivy away..."
"No one is taking Ivy away," Nathaniel declared firmly. "As of today, you are appointed the Head Estate Administrator. Your salary is quadrupled, and Ivy's education and healthcare will be fully funded by my family trust for the rest of her life."
Carol gasped, tears streaming down her face as she clutched Ivy. "Mr. Cross... thank you... thank you!"

Vanessa’s mouth hung open in absolute disbelief. "You're rewarding a maid over me?!"
"I am rewarding a good human being," Nathaniel replied coldly. "Now, Vanessa... it's time for you to meet your real wedding guests."
