Chapter 3 - The Gathering in the Hallway

In the bride's luxurious dressing suite, Vanessa Hale stood in front of a three-way gilded mirror, putting the finishing touches on her pearl-embellished veil.
Her mother, Eleanor Hale, sat on the plush velvet sofa, sipping a glass of thousand-dollar vintage champagne with a triumphant smirk on her face.
"Two years of playing the sweet little saint, Vanessa," Eleanor purred, admiring her own reflection in a compact mirror. "And today, it all pays off. The Cross empire, the hotel chains, the private jets... it’s finally ours."
"I know, Mother," Vanessa laughed softly, admiring the sparkle of her diamond necklace. "Though I have to admit, keeping up this 'charitable sweet girl' act around those pathetic servants has been exhausting. That miserable maid almost ruined my dress with her clumsy hands earlier. "Well, once the ring is on your finger, you can fire every last one of them," Eleanor sneered. "Starting with that useless widow and her annoying little brat."

Vanessa gasped, spinning around in surprise. "Nate! What on earth are you doing? It's bad luck to see the bride before the—"
She stopped speaking instantly.
Nathaniel walked into the room, flanked by Marcus and two armed estate security guards. Behind them stood Carol, who was holding little Ivy tightly in her arms. A dark bruise was already blossoming across Carol's left cheek, and red choke marks were visible along her throat.
Vanessa’s eyes flicked to Carol, then to Nathaniel. In a fraction of a second, her expression shifted back into her well-rehearsed, innocent angel persona.
"Oh my goodness, Nate!" Vanessa cried out, taking a step toward him with her hands clasped over her chest in fake horror. "What happened to Carol?! Carol, sweetie, did you fall? Nate, call a doctor immediately!"

Nathaniel didn't move an inch. He looked at her with a look of such utter revulsion that Vanessa’s fake smile faltered.
"Do not step a single inch closer to me, Vanessa," Nathaniel warned, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury.
